CENSORSHIP

The UN Wants To Censor The Entire Internet To Save Feminists’ Feelings

In a report released yesterday, entitled “Cyber Violence Against Women And Girls: A Global Wake-up Call,” UN Women, the group behind last year’s risible “He for She” campaign, called on governments to use their “licensing prerogative” to ensure that “telecoms and search engines” are only “allowed to connect with the public” if they “supervise content and its dissemination.”

In other words, if search engines and ISPs don’t comply with a list of the UN’s censorship demands, the UN wants national governments to cut off their access to the public.

So, what sort of content does the UN want to censor? ISIS recruitment videos, perhaps, which lure women into lives of rape and servitude? Live-streamed executions from Syria? Revenge porn or snuff videos? There’s no shortage of dangerous and potentially traumatising content on the web, after all, much of it disproportionately affecting women.

Alas not. The UN is hung up on “cyber violence against women,” a Kafkaesque term that is apparently shorthand for “women being criticised on the internet.” At least, that’s how at least two attendees at the launch of the UN report, published by the United Nations Broadband Commission, explained it yesterday.

According to feminist culture critic Anita Sarkeesian, who spoke at the event, online “harassment” doesn’t simply consist of what is “legal and illegal,” but “also the day-to-day grind of ‘you’re a liar’ and ‘you suck,’ including all of these hate videos that attack us on a regular basis.”

Unable to prove that they are the victims of a wave of “misogynistic hate” – no bomb threat against a feminist critic of video games has ever been deemed credible and there are serious doubts about threats supposedly levelled at transsexual activist Brianna Wu – feminists are trying to redefine violence and harassment to include disobliging tweets and criticisms of their work.

In other words: someone said “you suck” to Anita Sarkeesian and now we have to censor the internet. Who could have predicted such a thing? It’s worth noting, by the way, that if Sarkeesian’s definition is correct, Donald Trump is the world’s greatest victim of “cyber-violence.” Someone should let him know.  [lol  Milo's always so funny.]

Sarkeesian’s comments were echoed by former video game developer, feminist activist and professional victim Zoe Quinn, who told the United Nations: “There are individuals on YouTube who have made a living off of [sic] abusing Anita and I.” Quinn does not name any specific YouTubers, and we are left guessing as to who these mysterious “abusers” really are.

Hmm. Quinn makes more than $3,000 a month on donation site Patreon as she travels around the world talking about her “harassment” story. If anyone is turning a profit from alleged “online abuse,” it’s not the YouTubers.

The message from the UN seems to be: “cyber-violence” against women, at least according to their invited guests, is somehow equivalent to getting thumped, or bullied, or abused in real life, and it’s worth clamping down on basic free speech provisions to insulate these delicate first-world feminist wallflowers from the consequences of their own purposefully provocative statements.

The UN ignores the fact that both of their high-profile invitees are professional wind-up merchants who have capitalised on a media environment in which it has become acceptable to say almost anything about “straight white males” and which women, no matter how preposterous their opinions, can get column inches for saying they’ve been “threatened.” (No journalist will ever check their claims.)

Sarkeesian and Quinn are perhaps the finest living examples of what I call quantum superstate feminism, whose figureheads are at once aggressor and victim; trolling, provoking and ridiculing their ideological opponents while at the same time crying foul when their provocative language is returned in kind.

Somehow, I doubt women in actual peril outside Europe and the US will have much time for this self-regarding baloney.

Ridicule and criticism are not harassment. What your guests have done on the internet is harassment. @googleideas

— Milo Yiannopoulos (@Nero) September 23, 2015

The UN report itself contains a number of bizarre attempts to equate critical tweets on the internet with physical violence. “A cyber-touch is recognised as equally as harmful as a physical touch” says the report. In their press release, UN Women claim that “cyber violence … places a premium on emotional bandwidth.”

It doesn’t tell us what “emotional bandwidth” means, so we are left to guess. It sounds like “emotional quotient,” which girls say their boyfriends are lacking despite their higher IQs. Nonetheless, the concept of “emotional bandwidth” raises interesting questions. Is it a crime when Netflix starts buffering during a romantic comedy?

Inventing nebulous terms is a speciality of the UN. It allows them to “take action” (that is: issue reports no one reads) on something that doesn’t exist, which disguises their impotence when dealing with real human rights abuses. Needless to say, not everyone agrees that “cyber-violence” and “emotional bandwidth” are urgent humanitarian issues.

Hahahahahahahaha How The Fuck Is Cyber Bullying Real Hahahaha Nigga Just Walk Away From The Screen Like Nigga Close Your Eyes Haha

— Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) December 31, 2012

Tyler isn’t alone. As the Washington Post’s Caitlin Dewey points out, the UN’s grand plan to censor the web fights against the rising tide of cultural libertarianism. If UN Women think they have civil society on their side, they are mistaken. Everyone from academics and Hollywood actors to gamers and reddit users are sick of mendacious, sinister and profoundly anti-intellectual attempts to attack free expression with bizarre concepts like “cyber-violence” and “safe spaces.”

Even Dewey, a critic of unfettered free speech on the web, thinks the UN’s recommendations are “several steps too revolutionary.”

The UN report’s ham-fisted attempt to equate unwelcome words with violence isn’t its only problem. Its explicit focus on women is never justified, and runs contrary to the data. Research from the Pew Centre has found that “men and women are equally likely overall to have experienced “severe” [online] harassment.” (The research also found that women are twice as likely to be upset by online harassment, but that’s a separate question.) Yet the U.N. group appears to think women’s online harassment merits a special focus. Why?

The UN report’s explanation of the causes of “online cyber violence” echoes the tired language of 1990s moral panics, and in some cases even relies on outdated research from the same period. It blames the “mainstreaming of violence against women” on “popular music, movies, the gaming industry, and the general portrayal of women in popular culture.”

As an enterprising redditor has discovered, the UN’s source is an article from 2000, describing the theories of former Army psychologist Lt. Colonel David Grossman, which accuses Nintendo of manufacturing “equipment for satanic video games.” In the aftermath of the Columbine school shootings, Grossman appeared on TV alongside the evangelical moral crusader Jack Thompson, where he supported Thompson’s argument that video games “trained” school shooters.

The report also has a strange preoccupation with pornography, which it accuses of causing “aggressive behavioural tendencies” as well as “increased interest in coercing their partners into unwanted sex acts.” Their citation is a link to “Stop Porn Culture,” a campaign group chaired by the militantly sex-negative and widely criticised feminist Gail Dines.

Other citations in the report are dead links to old blog posts. One has to wonder if the UN expected anyone to fact-check it at all. Given that most of their “reports” are boondoggles, I suspect they’re surprised by all the attention.

You’d think UN Women would have more pressing concerns than porn, video games, and “cyber violence.” After all, Saudi Arabia, a country with a real violence against women problem, was recently selected to chair a key human rights panel elsewhere in the sprawling UN ecosystem. But ethical priorities don’t seem to be the UN’s strong suit.

It can be pointless and pedantic to play what some of us call “Oppression Olympics,” but in this case the discrepancy between this UN group’s complaints and the real suffering of women is too great to ignore. In a world afflicted by female genital mutilation, forced marriages and acid attacks on girls whose only crime is wanting an education, the UN has chosen to focus on the professional whinging of privileged and mendacious western activists.

The UN has always been a joke, but in this case, by providing a platform for such ludicrously entitled windbags, they have provided us all with the punchline themselves.

COMMENT

What, in my view, amounts to Western social and political oppression, driven by a melange of exploitative politicians and their parties, supranational organisations, non-government organisations, interest groups, various media darlings, the complicit corporate media, and leftist independent media, is suffocating.

Social media 'victimhood' lobbying culture has a parallel industry of 'victimhood' professional media messaging, sensationalising, and delivering a Chinese water torture of incessant dripping of subjective and agenda-driven complaint and sermon of one kind or another, posing as 'universal truth', delivered from a position of moral 'authority,' insisting the world is not as it ideally 'should' be, according to these self-appointed 'authorities' and their 'victim' ego identified exhibits, various 'supporters,' and other professional beneficiaries of 'victimhood' of some kind or other.
Self-interested and/or agenda-pushing parties receive rewards of a personal, professional and/or political nature, while pushing for a state-mandated emotional and social 'nirvana', that defies reality.
What they have in common is exploitation of what they portray as the 'need' to 'protect' some group or other (the designated 'victim', portrayed as 'helpless' etc), and calling for measures that ultimately put at risk important civil (and therefore political) liberties of all people
And when dealing with the internet, any incursion on freedom of speech is not merely confined to the nations of specific agenda-pushers; detrimental impact is amplified:  internationally.
Taking a 'protective' path concerning freedom of expression and freedom of speech, will not deliver the blissful conditions sought.
Instead, we can expect:  state-serving, and  state enforced, social and political oppression and sterility.
Milo's right about the UN being a joke.  On top of publicly severing heads in the hundreds per annum, Western ally, Saudi Arabia has recently sentenced a teenager to crucifixion.
As well as benefiting politicians that wish to stifle dissent and criticism (and abusers of power the world over that wish to silence critical voices), the path of censorship also benefits heavy-duty oppressors such as Saudi Arabia, when censorship is used (as it will be) to stifle criticism and information.
Freedom of speech (and therefore personal and political freedom) should be vigorously defended, first and foremost.
As a measure of where we are heading, check out the following item.
An Oxford educated libertarian described the item as 'beyond parody' and an example of politically correct student union suppression of free speech:

http://home.warwickpride.org/welfare/safe-space-policy/

Read ... and, once you've stopped laughing:  weep.  But do it quietly.  lol

[*Had to take a second look at that, as I thought that maybe he was mistaken and that this had nothing to do with students.  Nope, he's not mistaken.]

Use of Feminist Goals and Principles to Attack WikiLeaks

The persecution of Julian Assange is not feminist, it’s political
Jun 22, 2015 1:02PM | EMAIL | PRINT

Julian Assange has revealed a lot that powerful governments do not want us to know. But what should be made of the rape allegations against him? PhD candidate and former UN adviser Felicity Ruby explains.

Julian Assange has now been living in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for three years. WikiLeaks has revealed a lot that powerful governments do not want us to know. But what should be made of the rape allegations against him?

WikiLeaks’ disclosures have been devastating. For the naked government and corporate emperors caught stealing and lying, theirs is the devastation of losing power or acute embarrassment. For citizens unable to seize back illusions, theirs is the devastation of knowing that governments suppress truths, routinely lie and manipulate even more than previously imagined.

The most cynical and conspiratorial among us have found devastating detail to justify further re-examination of our belief systems, trust in leaders, our governments, their pretexts and execution of wars with corporate partners.

Anyone who has watched the Collateral Murder video or searched through the Cablegate files knows what I mean.

WikiLeaks’ disclosures about the distortion and manipulation of UN process, including the theft of biometric data of UN personnel, have shown why diplomacy at the UN has so often failed; the institution has been corrupted, infiltrated and attacked.

I suspected this when I worked at the UN. Now I know.

But as a feminist and a rape survivor, it’s the debate about feminism, WikiLeaks and Assange that has continued to disturb me the most.

The use of feminist goals and principles to attack WikiLeaks has amplified my devastation not only because WikiLeaks has provided the peace and women’s movements with many gifts — troves of evidence, example after example of the crimes and culture of militarised masculinity on the battlefield, in the board room, in the embassy.

I would be less worried if the epidemic of violence against women were being addressed as athletically by governments, the media, courts and police as it is in Assange’s case, if arrest warrants and manhunts were occurring with quite the same fervour.

Because they are not, I don’t find this selective and concerted effort on one man to be a feminist victory. Rather than “something being better than nothing”, selectivity damages and delegitimises real efforts to address violence against women.

Instead of a feminist victory, I see the violations we named and the laws and standards we agitated for being cynically used by forces that are not feminist to try to shut down WikiLeaks, to punish the organisation for revealing the truth about war, corruption and the ineptitude of governments.

This is not an investigation of alleged sexual offences in isolation.

This case started one month before a Swedish election, and several Swedes involved in the case are prominent members of one party.

The case also started within the eight to nine weeks between the release of the Afghan and the Iraq War Logs when the US government was aware that Assange was walking around with access to 251,000 diplomatic cables with intent to publish.

This case started when there was a 120-man Pentagon task force in operation.

I’ve read everything to do with the allegations — the good, the bad and the ugly — and it seems to me that:

Both women had consensual sex with Assange — quite a lot of it. Neither claims they said no or showed or demonstrated non-consent. That matters a lot, as it happens. Failing to see the difference between what happened and rape insults rape survivors and fails to recognise a continuum of violence that places consensual sex, failure to use a condom and rape in fundamentally different frames.
The senior prosecutor, Eva Finne, took on the case but then dropped the investigation not because she didn’t believe the women — she did — but because she said from the alleged conduct there was no indication of criminality.
One of the women has stated that she felt “railroaded” and has refused to have anything to do with the case. It appears the women have essentially lost any agency; they were not pressing charges; their inquiry to police was about STD testing. If the women were pressing charges and calling for feminist solidarity, it might make sense to offer it. In this case, it doesn’t, because they are not.
Isn’t justice delayed justice denied? Wouldn’t it have been in the interests of the women, justice and feminist aspirations in this area for the investigation to have involved swift questioning of Assange when he was in Sweden and making himself available for just this? Why have means routinely used under the mutual legal assistance procedures such as questioning in an embassy or by phone or video link still not been used?

The UK Supreme Court has ruled that any person in the UK can now be extradited to anywhere in Europe by any partisan prosecutor, without charge, without having to show any evidence and without proper judicial oversight. I find that as frightening as I do the potential of Assange finding himself temporarily surrendered to the US while his government looks the other way.

I hope that my feminist friends and colleagues think more about what is happening here — not only in terms of the cause but also how our movement is being used. If the world is not safe for an organisation like WikiLeaks to provide some of the most devastating revelations — including about militarised masculinity and its routine abuse of women and civilians in war — then it is not safe for any of us, least of all feminists.

COMMENT

It's not often that we see this kind of article in the press.

Usually, the press regurgitates the official narrative of the state and says nothing about the massive elephant in the room (the gaping holes and irregularities in both the Sweden police handling and Sweden prosecutor handling of this case); say nothing about important issues such as the use of causes to further hidden political agenda (persecution of WikiLeaks publisher, Assange, in this case); and the press studiously avoids the mention of devastating contradiction of Sweden police allegations by the women themselves.

When the press is silent, and when the press distorts the presentation of facts, it enables the powerful to persecute political targets without exposure or challenge.

One person's 'impassioned plea' is another person's manufactured propaganda. Go figure.

The above is my take on causes, politicians and UN (and other) celebrities 'campaigning' for women, feminism, equality, awareness and so on.

F*ck off with your preaching.
We're not morons.  We're aware.
We're not the lesser sex.  We don't need 'special' consideration.

And we certainly don't need 'the establishment':
(be it in the guise of prime ministers, presidents, actresses or advocates of causes)

Obama talking freedom, human rights, legacy, women's rights and reminiscing about Eleanor Roosevelt is preposterous.

Tobias Billström (Moderate Party) - calls Feminists 'a dark force'

Migration minister calls Feminists 'a dark force'

Published: 17 Sep 2014 08:49 GMT+02:00
Updated: 17 Sep 2014 09:11 GMT+02:00

Sweden's Migration Minister has said in a Facebook post that both the Sweden Democrats and the Feminist Initiative parties were "dark, gloomy, and destructive forces".

In a four-point Facebook status update, Sweden's Migration Minister Tobias Billström of the Moderate Party shared his thoughts about Sunday's election result.

"This election has no winners - except for the extremists," he wrote. SD and F! both represent dark, gloomy, and destructive forces that divide the people. They must be fought and met with a discussion of values."

Billström's press secretary said the minister was refusing interviews on the matter, but released a statement explaining that the post was on his private Facebook and represented his "reflections on the election loss".

Tobias Billström = sore loser ... Sweden Democrats hardly 'forces of darkness' -- looks like globalism has outlawed nationalism - #svpol

Billström >> longest-serving Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy in Sweden
Member of the Moderate Party
Billström became Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy on 6 October 2006.

Billström was stationed in the Ministry of Justice, unlike his immediate predecessors, who had been stationed in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

The Reinfeldt cabinet set a new target for the Swedish migration policy after it took office in October 2006, which was to increase the opportunities for labour immigration.

Tobias Billström has promoted that countries in Europe and the world should help refugees from Iraq.  He has emphasized the need for a very strong common asylum and migration policy, and that this could give more Iraqis in need of protection to access this.

In classified documents revealed by wikileaks, Tobias Billström together with Carl Bildt mentioned in their 2007 visit to Baghdad for the American Ambassador Ryan Crocker the Iraqi refugee situation in Sweden, in specific the reports entail the ministers mentioning honor killings and the Swedish opinion of restricting immigration..
 [Wikipedia]

That wasn't the feminist take-down I'd gleefully anticipated when I saw the headline!

Still good for a laugh.

Billstrom's ridiculous.

Now being anti-immigration is equated with being a 'dark force'?

Billstrom's problem is that he's still pushing the agenda of capitalism & globalism on Sweden and on Europe, on behalf of his imperialist buddies.

That's my take at this point.

Bear in mind, I have only just begun to look at Swedish politics -- so my knowledge at this point is limited.

This some of the information I looked at today.

As usual, it's easier to just copy over where I've been than it is to try to recall.

Ran off a copy of the massive Stuxnet article because I find it impossible to focus on something long and involved, staring at a screen.  Find it better to have a hard copy for mark-up and ease of reading.

At the end of my day of checking things out, I'm wondering why I've bothered running off the involved Stuxnet hacking article when I'm not a techie and really don't need to know anything in depth.

On the other hand, it's supposed to be some techie (or surveillance) big deal, so I might have to force myself to get through the information -- even if it's just skimming over it.

SWEDISH POLITICAL LANDSCAPE & THE FEMINIST AGENDA

Every country needs a political party like Sweden’s Feminist Initiative
It’s easy to dismiss such organisations as pie-in-the-sky idealists, but this Sunday’s election could see it make history

There is an election in Sweden in a few days, and if you mention the fact that a feminist party is close to entering parliament you will often receive knowing eye-rolls in response. Of course, Sweden … where else? This country, after all, is the land of gender-neutral pronouns, “latte dads” proposals to tax men to offset the cost of domestic violence and a tourism website proudly proclaiming “the modern Swedish man is a feminist”. (From my entirely subjective experience, these eye-rolls are significantly more common and exaggerated if you happen to be speaking to a man.)

The problem with this understanding of feminism and gender politics in Sweden is that it is a mélange of fact, suggestion and myth. Yes, Sweden is ranked as one of the best places for women to work and have children, but it is also a place where men dominate corporate boards, make more money than women for the same work and take four times less parental leave than women. And, of course, this is in addition to the everyday sexism and sexual violence that permeates Sweden, as it does virtually every country in the world. The fact that Sweden is “better” than other countries when it comes to gender politics is not to say that equality has actually been achieved.

Enter Sweden’s Feminist Initiative. Founded in 2006, the stated aim of the party is to “drive through a feminist politics for a world free from discrimination” and to undermine “gendered power structures”.

It’s not often a political party that looks likely to attract a tiny proportion of the vote in a country of 10 million garners much attention, but as Swedes head to the polls on Sunday, FI could make a small piece of history. With support nearing 4% – the threshold required to enter the Swedish parliament – FI could become the first feminist party to enter parliament within an EU country, and one of a miniscule number to do so globally.

...

But in the run-up to the 2014 European parliament elections, Sweden went through what FI leader Gudrun Schyman has called a “feminist spring”. There were television programmes on the state of Swedish feminism, a national debate took place and FI began to see significant growth in membership. In turn, poll numbers rose and, amazingly, FI became the first feminist party to get a seat in the European parliament when it attracted 5.3% of the vote.

The language used by the party can be alien to outsiders, with words such as “heteronormativity”, “structural discrimination”, “patriarchal” and “subordination” sprinkled throughout its website. The tone can be academic in nature and FI is often dismissed as a one-issue party with little grasp of how its feminist agenda can be applied in practice.

To me, this dismissal misses the larger point regarding the party’s practical and symbolic importance. Whether or not FI enters the Swedish parliament, what it has contributed to the Swedish political landscape is another important layer to what I describe as a “national conversation for adults” about feminism and gender politics: a conversation, I argue, that I did not see in other countries where I have lived – namely the US (my home country), the UK and Turkey. It seems impossible to have a grown-up discussion on gender equality unless you can agree that discrimination at the macro and micro levels of society is real and doesn’t just exist in the heads of mythological, cartoonish man-haters.

I grew up in Europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and remember how the greens were dismissed by the mainstream media and political establishment as nothing more than a motley collection of ex-hippies with no understanding of real-world politics who coalesced around a single issue. Now, 40 years later, I think it is fair to say that the greens were way ahead of their time, and it was the media and political establishment who were ill-informed, condescending and short-sighted.  [ a) Apples & Oranges + b) Acceptance of one ideology etc, is irrelevant in weighing up the merits of likewise accepting some other ideology.]

In the same way, it is all too easy to dismiss parties such as FI as “pie in the sky” idealists racking up protest votes. Whether you support it or not, if the only thing FI achieves is to keep discrimination, feminism and equality firmly entrenched in the Swedish political agenda, and to ensure that these issues are acceptable topics for broad national debate, that is an achievement for which any party should be congratulated.

Somebody needs to go to town on the irrational Swedish feminist agenda, its proponents and the consequences.

What's wrong with the journalists; are they all too pussy to wade in?

As I see it, this irrational feminst agenda (that's no doubt been hijacked and exploited by the unscrupulous) has a far-reaching impact not only on the political climate in Sweden, but also on culture, society, legislation, the operation of law and, ultimately, on justice.

Furthermore, this all-pervasive and omnipresent cock-eyed agenda that's been exploited to further other agendas (that have nothing to do with feminism), has in fact empowered the Swedish State to disempower Swedish women: to infantalize Swedish women, to silence Swedish women and to, ultimately, *control* Swedish women -- as if Swedish women are merely silent, passive and invisible chattels which are the property of the State of Sweden, rather than fully independent, autonomous, capable, legally recognised and equal beings.

The Assange case clearly demonstrates the warped relationship between Sweden (the State) and the gagged, impotent, silent, invisible (and unwilling) women it claims to represent.

 PS

Sweden definitely needs a 'national conversation' but that conversation is not limited to the considerable issue of the 'feminist' agenda in Swedish society.

The conversation that Sweden needs to have extends to a host of unspoken, but related, elephant-in-the-room problems that are the result of commercial, geopolitical agendas (overt and hidden), that have been pursued by the monied classes and backed by domestic politicians, without regard for the integrity or welfare of Swedish society.
