COMMENT

I couldn't finish watching this.

Even though the victim is already dead, it's sickening watching them hacking away at his neck.

These people are savages.

Europe is finished.

And we're all f*cked.
Oh, and CNN (as well as FoxNews - mentioned elsewhere) is promoting these Turkish, Saudi, Qatari and Western supported savages as 'ISIS officials'.
The 'FSA' are those the US and the Anglo-US NATO & European Union alliance are training, arming and protecting, and their intermediary is Turkey, who shot down a Russian jet in the process of eradicating this filth that's attacking the legitimate government of Syria on behalf of their Western masters.
It's these savages that the West has unleashed and is calling the 'moderate rebels.'

And European and Western governments are letting these savages cross borders, while the deluded sing and wave 'refugees welcome' banners.

Someone, please deploy nukes.

Hollywood Pimps World View Devoted to Control & Destruction

Why the Oscars are a con
11 February 2010 - John Pilger

Why are so many films so bad? This year's Oscar nominations are a parade of propaganda, stereotypes and downright dishonesty. The dominant theme is as old as Hollywood: America's divine right to invade other societies, steal their history and occupy our memory. When will directors and writers behave like artists and not pimps for a world-view devoted to control and destruction?

I grew up on the movie myth of the Wild West, which was harmless enough unless you happened to be a Native American. The formula is unchanged. Self-regarding distortions present the nobility of the American colonial aggressor as a cover for massacre, from the Philippines to Iraq. I only fully understood the power of the con when I was sent to Vietnam as a war reporter. The Vietnamese were "gooks" and "Indians", whose industrial murder was preordained in John Wayne movies and left to Hollywood to glamourise or redeem.

I use the word murder advisedly, because what Hollywood does brilliantly is suppress the truth about America's assaults. These are not wars, but the export of a gun-addicted, homicidal "culture". And when the notion of psychopaths as heroes wears thin, the bloodbath becomes an "American tragedy" with a soundtrack of pure angst.

Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker is in this tradition. A favourite for multiple Oscars, her film is "better than any documentary I've seen on the Iraq war. It's so real it's scary" (Paul Chambers, CNN). Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian reckons it has "unpretentious clarity" and is "about the long and painful endgame in Iraq", and that it "says more about the agony and wrong and tragedy of war than all those earnest well-meaning movies".

What nonsense. This film offers a vicarious thrill through yet another standard-issue psychopath, high on violence in somebody else's country where the deaths of a million people are consigned to cinematic oblivion. The hype around Bigelow is that she may be the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director. How insulting that a woman is celebrated for a typically violent all-male war movie.

The accolades echo those for The Deer Hunter (1978), which critics acclaimed as "the film that could purge a nation's guilt"! The Deer Hunter lauded those who had caused the deaths of more than three million Vietnamese, while reducing those who resisted to barbaric commie stick figures. In 2001, Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down provided a similar, if less subtle, catharsis for another "noble failure" by the US, this time in Somalia, airbrushing the heroes' massacre of up to 10,000 Somalis.

By contrast, the fate of an admirable American war film, Redacted, is instructive. Made in 2007 by Brian De Palma, the film is based on the true story of the gang rape of an Iraqi teenager and the murder of her family by US soldiers. There is no heroism, no purgative. The murderers are murderers, and De Palma ingeniously describes the complicity of Hollywood and the media in the epic crime of Iraq. The film ends with a series of photographs of Iraqi civilians who were killed. When it was ordered that their faces be blacked out "for legal reasons", De Palma said: "I think that's terrible because now we have not even given the dignity of faces to this suffering people. The great irony about Redacted is that it was redacted." After a limited release in the US, the film all but vanished.

Non-American (or non-western) humanity is not deemed to have box-office appeal, dead or alive. They are the "other" who are allowed, at best, to be saved by "us". In Avatar, James Cameron's vast and violent money-printer, 3-D noble savages known as the Na'vi need a good-guy American soldier, Sergeant Jake Sully, to save them. This confirms they are "good". Natch.

My Oscar for the worst of this year's nominees goes to Invictus, Clint Eastwood's unctuous insult to the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Based on a hagiography of Mandela by a British journalist, John Carlin, the film might have been a product of apartheid propaganda. In promoting the racist, thuggish rugby culture as a panacea of the "rainbow nation", Eastwood gives barely a hint that many black South Africans were deeply embarrassed and hurt by Mandela's embrace of the hated springbok symbol of their suffering. He airbrushes white violence - but not black violence, which is ever present as a threat. As for the Boer racists, they have hearts of gold, because they "didn't really know". The subliminal theme is all too familiar: colonialism deserves forgiveness and accommodation, never justice.

At first I thought Invictus could not be taken seriously, but then I looked around the cinema at young people and others for whom the horrors of apartheid have no reference, and I understood the damage such a slick travesty does to our memory and its moral lessons. Imagine Eastwood making a happy-Sambo equivalent in America's Deep South. He would not dare.

The film most nominated for an Oscar and promoted by the critics is Up in the Air, which stars George Clooney as a man who travels the US sacking people and collecting frequent-flyer points. Before the triteness dissolves into sentimentality, every stereotype is summoned, especially of women. There is a bitch, a saint and a cheat. However, this is "a movie for our times", says the director, Jason Reitman, who boasts about having cast real sacked people.

“We interviewed them about what it was like to lose their job in this economy," said he, "then we'd fire them on camera and ask them to respond the way they did when they lost their job . . . It was an incredible experience to watch these non-actors with 100 per cent realism." Wow, what a winner.

        COMMENT

Noticed this article while grabbing a link to another article, from the author's site.

Interesting to see author's take on Hollywood big screen propaganda.

I stopped watching movies years ago, so I haven't seen any of these films ... and I probably wouldn't have been attracted to war films, or American hero films, regardless.

Figured it was all propaganda years ago, but I'd never have been able to articulate why it's propaganda, as the author does.

'Holed Up' Is Press-Speak for: Undemocratically Bailed Up

        hole up
        1. To hibernate in or as if in a hole.

        2. Informal To take refuge in or as if in a hideout.

Lazy (or indifferent) writers are forever repeating the misleading and offensive phrase, 'holed up,' in articles regarding Julian Assange.
Assange is an award-winning Australian journalist, who has published material that has exposed US and allied war crimes.
Assange is the subject of an unprecedented investigation conducted by a number of US justice and security agencies.
Assange is also the subject of a US Grand Jury secret probe, which remains sealed.
The US has undoubtedly sought extradition of Assange, given that Britain refuses to release relevant documents (sought pursuant to Freedom of Information request), on the stated grounds that it would impact on Britain's  diplomatic relations with other states.
Assange is clearly the subject of political persecution and has been granted political asylum by Ecuador, in accordance with international law.
Every time this inaccurate, belittling, and insulting phrase is repeated by the press, Assange is cast as fugitive/gangster 'hiding out.'
The press do both Assange and the public a disservice, by writing mindlessly and failing to make it clear to the public Julian Assange is the target of calculated political persecution.
The undemocratic POLITICAL persecution of Julian Assange has been waged by legal manoeuvre, media propaganda, and by British government backed and authorised police siege that has cost MILLIONS of pounds.
While imposing harsh austerity measures on pensioners, the disabled and the economically underprivileged, Britain rationalises this waste of public funds on what is clearly a  politically motivated siege of Julian Assange, on the basis of reliance upon nothing but flimsy and suspect Sweden police allegations that were tossed out by a senior prosecutor in Stockholm five years ago, before subsequently being revived in Sweden:  for political expediency.
        Corruption & Hypocrisy
The British government is a party to war crimes exposed by Assange; the British government has released Chile dictator, Pinochet, wanted for crimes against humanity; and the British government shelters Israel's Tzipi Livni from a war crimes arrest warrant.
British hypocrite authorities cast slurs on Ecuador and Assange in the guise of a demand for 'justice,' when these same hypocrites have a long history of contempt for law and justice (including commission of war crimes and sheltering alleged war criminals from arrest), and the corporate media lets corrupt, undemocratic, authorities get away with shameless lies in support of this travesty of justice.
The detractors who attack Assange and WikiLeaks (and attack supporters by dismissively labelling supporters 'cultists'), do so cravenly - while hiding behind extraneous twin issues of 'female victimhood' and feminism.
These detractors are either misguided fools or wilfully ignorant -  hidden agenda serving - trolls, seeking to manipulate public perception and discourse, in favour of a corrupt government agenda that has proven contemptuous of human life, justice, and the law.
Writers who resort to using the trite 'holed up' are generally the same writers that follow up by regurgitating the full-of-holes government narrative, without challenge.
The negative spin cycle is then repeated like this on almost a daily basis, that has spanned years now.
The authorities that have detained Julian Assange for close to 5 years for political reasons and without charge, must be delighted that the press permits them to commit this offence against a truth-telling journalist ... and that this press even obliges by making acts of political persecution easier to carry out.

ASSANGE - Media Distortion - The Local

        COMMENT

The above article caught my attention, so I thought I'd check out information relating to suicides in Sweden.  Random look, out of curiosity.

Got onto The Local Sweden and was surprised to find a pic of Julian Assange in the margin of an unrelated July 2014 article, with a link to a 'Timeline' of 'Julian Assange sex allegations in Sweden.'

Of course, there's no association whatsoever:  the Assange 'timeline' link features in all The Local Sweden articles - new and old, apparently.
So even if you click on a current article, Why Americans trust Swedish companies, for example, there's the same Assange pic and 'timeline' in the margin.
         Unrelated Article - 28 April 2015

A quick check indicates this 'timeline' is only a Sweden feature, as it isn't featured in the Austria, France and Germany online editions (although I haven't checked Italy, Norway, Spain or Switzerland).

Back to The Local Sweden edition 'timeline' (which I haven't checked in its entirety for accuracy):
the very beginning of this 'timeline' has left out some pretty important details:
the matter was dismissed by a prosecutor for lack of evidence before it was revived (which is very unusual); the 'allegations' are police allegations rather than party allegations (the parties merely sought an STD check); the parties had discussions and had met in advance; statements were not taken in accordance with regulations; a policewoman involved in the matter was friend of one of the parties; an unread and unsigned statement was abandoned by one party on learning of police intentions; the unread, unsigned & abandoned 'statement' was loaded onto the police database and subsequently amended.
And that's just off the top of my head without digging up a bunch of other relevant material, in response to only the first brief entry under 'August 2010'.
I've previously noticed such a 'timeline' in their publication, but I didn't examine it and I had no idea it linked to all their stories.
Uncertain whether it has been an enduring feature of the site, or whether the The Local digs up the link to 'hang out' for a period of time, whenever there is fresh news of Assange.

Whatever the case, it looks like that 'timeline' has been active to some extent or other since 28 Oct 2014:
        Published: 28 Oct 2014 12:09 GMT+01:00
        Updated: 11 Mar 2015 10:36 GMT+01:00
So what, exactly, is the point of having a simplistic (and therefore distorted) Assange 'timeline' in the margin of every story, new and old, in The Local Sweden?
Perhaps The Local is aiming for an intended audience that's merely interested in some light information?  Even so, I think a 'shallow' readership (ie those with my short attention span ... LOL), wouldn't exactly be overloaded by brief mention of the dismissal and irregularities.

The feeling I get is that a simplistic 'timeline' that excludes material facts (and references to police and other irregularities) is a distortion that may be prejudicial to the public perception of Assange, even if that's not intended effect.
After these look ups and messing around with formatting, I'm over my original intention for the time being.  See.  Short attention span.  LOL.
Suicide rates might have to wait until I take an interest some time again.

        PS ...

Been a bit embarrassed, wondering whether I have a bias, and whether it's too much to expect inclusion of a host of particulars in a 'timeline' of 'allegations'.

But I've gone around full circle and am back at my earlier conclusion:  a 'timeline' that excludes a heap of relevant information is distortion by omission, as the completely whittled down version of events changes how events are perceived by those unfamiliar with the details.
It reminds me of those TV shows where someone's on trial answering a question, and they're immediately cut off by a bullying prosecutor and prevented from providing anything but a 'yes' or 'no' answer, while those that sit in judgement are denied the whole picture.
What is presented and what is withheld is hugely important.

Check out what they're spending to deny him the political asylum he's been granted.  That's confirmation for you.

Took exception to the BBC article because it seems to convey that he's done some dodgy number to avoid being questioned.
That isn't the case at all and the public should be made aware that Assange has been granted POLITICAL ASYLUM by Ecuador.

The Google stuff, I don't know what to make of.

Unless you use anonymity services like Tor and inhabit the 'deep web' (or whatever it is), is there an alternative to Google?
