The Germans were lucky; in Sweden, similar attacks have been taking place for more than a year and the authorities are still playing catch up. Only now is the truth emerging, both about the attacks and the cover-ups. Stefan Löfven, our Prime Minister, has denounced a ‘double betrayal’ of women and has promised an investigation. But he ought to be asking this: what made the police and even journalists cover up the truth? The answer can be discovered in the reaction to the Cologne attacks. Sweden prides itself on its sexual equality and has even pioneered a feminist foreign policy. When hundreds of women were reported to have been molested and abused in Cologne — at the hands of an organised mob — the reaction from Swedish politicians and pundits ought to have been one of outrage. Instead, we were told that the events in Cologne were not unusual. An article in Aftonbladet, Sweden’s largest tabloid, argued that it was racist to point out that the perpetrators in Cologne had been described as North African or Arab, since German men had carried out sexual assaults during Bavaria’s Oktober-fest. Another Aftonbladet article said that reporting on the Cologne attacks was bowing to right-wing extremism. Over the last week, we have been told over and over that the real issue is men, not any particular culture — that Swedish men are no better. Then last week Sweden’s own stories began to emerge. During the We Are Sthlm music festival, large groups of young men harassed girls sexually. It began in 2014 and it also went on during last year’s festival. According to internal police reports the groups were ‘so-called refugee youths primarily from Afghanistan’. The youngest of the victims was 12 years old. The police claimed that there were ‘relatively few crimes and arrests considering the number of participants’. Internal reports told a different story. The police were shocked enough by the harassment to try to come up with a strategy to handle the groups of molesters at the festival — a strategy that was evidently unsuccessful. The trouble was that they were trying to deal with a problem but would not speak its name. As Peter Ågren, police chief in central Stockholm, put it: ‘Sometimes we do not dare to say how things really are because we believe it will play into the hands of the Sweden Democrats.’ As we now know, police officers in Stockholm are instructed not to reveal the ethnicity or nationality of any suspects lest they be accused of racism.  [comment:  Agren has stated that he was misquoted by Dagens Nyheter & that he did not specifically link Sweden Democrats with the rationale put out for not reporting the mob rapes / sex assaults, although there was general discussion regarding nationalist parties, as I understand from (translated) article I recently read.  So the Swedish paper that did not report on the disclosures made 6 months ago by a whistleblower, subsequently also misquoted Agren (HERE)] The Sweden Democrats are the anti-immigration populist force in Sweden — no longer a fringe element but the third–largest party after the election of 2014. Opinion polls suggest they are growing ever stronger. They are reviled by all other parties, who try to fight them by rejecting their every claim as baseless. As a result, immigration cannot be discussed frankly in Sweden. If you mention anything negative about refugees or immigration, you’re accused of playing into the hands of the reviled far-right. As a result, even legitimate concerns are silenced or labelled xenophobic. Take Roger Ticoalu, director of events at Stockholm City Council. He said he had been utterly unaware of the risk of such attacks:     ‘It was a modus operandi that we had never seen before: large groups of young men who surround girls and molest them.’ The German police made a similar point: they are used to handling drunks. But gangs of young men encircling and then groping women at large public gatherings: who has ever heard of such a thing? In the Arab world, it’s something of a phenomenon. It has a name: ‘Taharrush gamea’. Sometimes the girls are teased and have their veils torn off by gangs of young men; sometimes it escalates into rape. Five years ago, this form of attack was the subject of an award-winning Egyptian film, 678. Instances of young men surrounding and attacking girls were reported throughout the Arab Spring protests in Cairo in 2011 and 2012. Lara Logan, a CNN journalist covering the fall of Hosni Mubarak, was raped in Tahrir Square. Taharrush gamea is a modern evil, and it’s being imported into Europe. Our authorities ought to be aware of it. But they can’t be made aware, when any mention of the issue is discouraged. This leaves the police unprepared, and leaves the public feeling not just vulnerable but deceived. It doesn’t take a conspiracy theorist to wonder how many more instances there have been where Swedish police have taken political considerations into account before disclosing information. Before Dan Eliasson became Sweden’s national police commissioner, he tweeted that he ‘vomited’ when he saw Jimmie Åkesson, party leader of the Sweden Democrats, on television. To what degree were his own personal political views imprinted on the Swedish police? Were the officers who covered up the sexual harassments responding to signals from Eliasson? Did they think that making a fuss about immigrant crime was a bad career move, and did that stop them doing their duty? Even now, Swedes are still trying to figure out what exactly has been going on. Reports are emerging of Taharrush gamea-style harassment in Malmö on New Year’s Eve. According to police reports, hundreds of refugee youths from Afghanistan roamed around and ‘surrounded intoxicated girls/women and harassed them’. Similar incidents are being reported from towns such as Kalmar and Karlstad. The Finnish authorities are handling reports of organised sexual harassment perpetrated by Iraqi immigrants. We Swedes pride ourselves on our unrivalled record on respecting women’s rights. But when women’s rights conflict with the goal of accommodating other cultures, it’s almost always women who are pushed to the side. This week, the chattering classes in Sweden will be worrying about how this story plays into the hands of the Sweden Democrats. But events have moved beyond that. The truth may be painful. November 4: Bobel Barqasho, a 31-year-old Syrian, was sentenced by Sweden's Supreme Court to 14 years in prison. Before his case reached the Supreme Court, Barqasho had been sentenced by a lower court to 9 years in prison, then acquitted by the Court of Appeals. In February 2013, Barqasho threw his wife off a sixth-floor balcony. Against all odds, the woman survived the 13-meter (about 43 feet) fall, but was badly injured. When she woke up after five weeks in a coma, her head was held together by a helmet, her face felt loose, and her teeth were gone. In the Court of Appeals, the defense managed to plant reasonable doubt about the man's guilt by claiming the woman was depressed and had jumped of her own free will] so the Court of Appeals set him free. By the time the Supreme Court pronounced its sentence of 14 years, Barqasho had disappeared. He is now being sought by Interpol. November 6: The Grönkulla School in Alvesta closed after reports of a rape at the facility spread on social media. A Somali boy had apparently been sexually harassing a 12-year-old girl for some time. On October 17, he allegedly took his attentions a step farther, pulled the girl behind a bush and raped her. The girl's father had been unsuccessful in trying to get the school to address the problem earlier, but even after the reported rape, the school's management did not act. The boy was allowed to continue going to the school – just on a schedule different from the girl's. Her distraught parents told the news website Fria Tider: "We are being spat on because we are Swedish." In protest against the school's management, many parents, viewing the school as having sided with the perpetrator, moved their children to other schools. November 9: Social commentator and whistleblower Merit Wager revealed on her blog that administrators at the Immigration Service had all been ordered to "accept the claim that an applicant is a child, if he does not look as if he is over 40." A staggering 32,180 "unaccompanied refugee children" had arrived during 2015 by December 1 -- since then another 1,130 have come -- and the government finally decided to take action. If its proposition is approved by Parliament, everyone who looks adult-aged will be forced to go through a medical age-determination procedure. One of the reasons Sweden stopped doing these in the first place, was that pediatricians refused to take part in them. They said the procedures were "unreliable." November 10: A 28-year-old Iraqi man was prosecuted for raping a woman on a night train between Finland and Sweden. The man had originally planned to seek asylum in Finland, but had found the living conditions there too harsh. He had therefore taken a train back to Sweden. In a couchette (sleeping car where men and women are together), the rapist and two other asylum seekers met one of the many Swedish women whose hearts go out to "new arrivals." The woman bought sandwiches for the men; they drank vodka. When two of the men started groping the woman, she told them to stop, yet chose to lie down and go to sleep. Sometime during the night, she was awakened by the Iraqi as he raped her. The woman managed to break free and locate a train attendant. To the attendant's surprise, the woman did not immediately want to press charges. The court documents state: "The train attendant asked if he should call the police. At first, the woman did not want him to do so, because she did not want to put N.N., an asylum seeker, in a tough spot. She felt sorry for him... and was afraid he would be deported back to Iraq." The man was given a sentence of one year in prison, payment of 85,000 kronor (about $10,000) in damages, and deportation -- but will be allowed to come back to Sweden after five years. November 10: An Algerian and a Syrian asylum seeker were indicted for raping a Swedish woman in Strängnäs. The men, 39-year-old from Algeria and 31-year-old from Syria, met the woman in a bar one night in August. When the woman left, one of the men followed her, pulled her to the ground, and assaulted her. Afterwards, the woman kept walking, and ran into two other men -- the Syrian and another unidentified man -- and was raped again. The Syrian reportedly also spit her in face and said, "I'm going to f--k you, little Swedish girl." The men, who lived at the same asylum house, denied knowing each other when questioned by the police. The verdict was announced on December 1. Rapist number one was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, 117,000 kronor (about $14,000) in damages, and deportation to Algeria. Rapist number two was convicted of aggravated rape and sentenced to four years in prison. He cannot be deported, however, because "there are currently hindrances towards enforcing deportations to Syria." He was also ordered to pay the woman 167,000 kronor (about $20,000) in damages. November 13: A trial began against eight Eritrean men, between the ages of 19 and 26, who according to the District Court, "crudely and ruthlessly" gang-raped a 45-year-old woman. She had been waiting in a stairwell for a friend when the men invited her into an apartment. Inside, she was thrown on the floor, held down, beaten and brutally raped. When questioned by the police, she said, "It felt as if there were hands and fingers everyplace. Fingers penetrated me, vaginally, anally. It hurt very much. I could feel the fingernails." She said she could also hear the Eritreans laughing and speaking in their own language while they raped her. "They seemed to be enjoying themselves," she said. When two of the men started fighting over who should rape her next, she tried to flee, but one of the men hit her over the head; she fell unconscious. After coming to, she escaped out a window and was able to reach a neighbor. The District Court of Falun established that several men had taken part in the attack, but the District Attorney was unable to prove who had done what. Therefore, only one man was convicted of aggravated rape, and sentenced to five years in prison. The others were sentenced to only 10 months in prison for helping to conceal a serious criminal offense. After serving their time, the men will be allowed to stay in Sweden. Now the Nazis’ apprentices in Sweden are using similar tactics to intimidate government opponents. Observers of Swedish politics have long anticipated that the country’s only oppositional party, the Sweden Democrats, would be hit with a coordinated campaign in order to wreck the party before the up-coming parliamentary elections in September. As the Sweden Democrats’ opinion polls keep rising – and are now above 12 percent – supporters of the status quo when it comes to mass immigration are clearly worried and have embarked on a campaign to take down the party. The axe is being wielded by the newspaper Expressen in collaboration with the semi-official left extremist intelligence-gathering organization, the Research Group. Their objective is to expose anonymous contributors to so-called ”hate sites” – i.e., sites that express opinions anathema to the ruling group of seven political parties or provide information that the ruling parties and their allies in the mainstream media and their far-left abettors do not want the public to know. In particular, the wrecking campaign is directed against individuals who have expressed non-state sanctioned opinions on immigration and Islam. In practice it is impossible for critics of the seven-party line to be heard in the surface media, so a great number of Swedes have tried to get their opinions across by anonymously posting them at such sites as Exponerat, Avpixlat and Fria Tider. By means of penetrating the commenting system Disqus, the Research Group has succeeded in finding the mailing addresses of these anonymous commentators and Expressen has now started publishing their names and other personal information about them. Expressen and the Research Group insist that they have broken no law in the process. Clearly, the pronouncements of some of those that have been exposed are such that no regular newspaper would print them – whether in Sweden or any other Western country. But it has to be kept in mind that these are the voices of people whose opinions have been driven underground. These are the words of those who feel desperate and who would probably have spoken in more measured tones if they had had a chance to be heard in the mainstream media. In other words, when a vast section of public opinion is excluded from being heard – as has been the case in Sweden for decades – this is what might have been expected. There can be no doubt that Expressen’s aim is to ruin the lives and careers of those it is now hanging out to dry ­– and to frighten anyone else from voicing criticism of the government’s failed immigration and integration policies. In other words, after stifling debate in the mainstream media, the Swedish political and media elite is now attempting to close the last outlets for anti-government speech. And as Avpixlat comments,  Expressen has gone far beyond merely exposing its enemies. The paper’s journalists have ”approached private individuals in their homes, their places of work and even harassing their children in school. It no longer looks like persecution –­ it is persecution.” Expressen and its far-left collaborators are of course well aware of what they are exposing their victims to: They may lose their jobs or businesses, their families and friends, they will become vulnerable to physical attacks, their homes may be wrecked – as has already happened. Some will undoubtedly despair and end up committing suicide. Penetrating the Disqus commenting system may be legal in Sweden – although Disqus has characterized the methods of the Research Group as a ”targeted attack”. In a statement dated December 10, Disqus VP Stephen Roy, describes the activities of the Research Group – ­ without directly identifying it – as a ”breach of our privacy guidelines.
