Israeli flag burned at Kiev Holocaust memorial on Yom Hashoah May 5, 2016 5:44pm   (JTA) — A group of young people burned an Israeli flag outside a Ukraine Holocaust memorial in Kiev on Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on Thursday. The flag burning near the Babi Yar ravine, where 30,000 Jews were murdered over the course of two days in September 1941, was captured on surveillance video, Interfax-Ukraine reported. Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko condemned the incident, referring to the flag burners as “young vandals.” He called on law enforcement authorities to investigate. “This happened on the national Holocaust Remembrance Day, when the Jewish people all over the world remember the 6 million victims who perished during World War II,” the press service of Kiev City State Administration quoted Klitscho saying, according to Interfax. “It is intolerable to brutalize the memory of the victims, especially at the place which is globally known as one of the symbols of a terrible crime of fascism, at the [Babi Yar], where dozens of thousands of people of different nationalities, the majority of them, Jewish, had been destroyed,” he said. The flag burning is the latest in a string of anti-Semitic incidents at the memorial, according to the Times of Israel. Klitschko appealed to law enforcement agencies for help in strengthening security measures at the site. Last year, the monument was vandalized with swastikas on five separate occasions, according to the Times of Israel. By Max Blumenthal / AlterNet November 18, 2014 AlterNet has learned that an amendment to the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would have forbidden US assistance, training and weapons to neo-Nazis and other extremists in Ukraine was kept out of the final bill by the Republican-led House Rules Committee. Introduced by Democratic Representative John Conyers, the amendment was intended to help tamp down on violent confrontations between Ukrainian forces and Russian separatists. A USA Today/Pew poll conducted in April while the NDAA was being debated found that Americans opposed by more than 2 to 1 providing the Ukrainian government with arms or other forms of military assistance. If passed, Conyers' amendment would have explicitly barred those found to have offered “praise or glorification of Nazism or its collaborators, including through the use of white supremacist, neo-Nazi, or other similar symbols” from receiving any form of support from the US Department of Defense. The amendment was presented by congressional staffers to lobbyists from Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, two of the country’s largest established Jewish pressure groups. Despite their stated mission to combat anti-Semitism and violent extremism, the ADL and Wiesenthal Center refused to support Jeffries and Conyers’ proposal. According to Democratic sources in Congress, staffers from the ADL’s Washington office and the Simon Wiesenthal Center rejected the amendment on the grounds that right-wing Ukrainian parties like Svoboda with documented records of racist extremism had “moderated their rhetoric.” An ADL lobbyist insisted that “the focus should be on Russia,” while the Wiesenthal Center pointed to meetings between far-right political leaders in Ukraine and the Israeli embassy as evidence that groups like Svoboda and Right Sector had shed their extremism. The ADL’s Washington office and the Simon Wiesenthal Center did not respond to numerous requests by email and telephone for comment. Earlier this year, the ADL’s outgoing National Director Abraham Foxman noted Svoboda’s “history of anti-Semitism and platform of ethnic nationalism” in a press release demanding the party renounce its past glorification of Stepan Bandera, a World War Two-era Nazi collaborator who has become a symbol of Ukrainian nationalism. When the Ukrainian parliament failed to pass a bill this October honoring Bandera’s Ukrainian Rebel Army, about 8000 supporters of Svoboda and the extremist Right Sector marched on the building, attacking riot police with homemade weapons while waving Banderist flags and Svoboda banners. The violent backlash was a reminder that the legend of Bandera would not die any time soon, and that Foxman’s admonitions had fallen on deaf ears. Svobodoa’s leader, Oleh Tyahnybok, once called for the liberation of his country from the “Muscovite-Jewish mafia.” In 2010, following the conviction of the Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk for his supporting role in the death of nearly 30,000 people at the Sobibor camp, Tyahnybok flew to Germany to praise him as a hero who was “fighting for truth.” Since the Euromaidan revolution, however, Svoboda has fought to rehabilitate its image. This has meant meeting with Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Reuven Din El and appealing to shared national values. “I would like to ask Israelis to also respect our patriotic feelings,” Tyahnybok has remarked. “Probably each party in the [Israeli] Knesset is nationalist. With God’s help, let it be this way for us too.” Right Sector, the radical right-wing movement that battled riot police during the latter stages of the Euromaidan uprising, earned plaudits from the ADL’s Foxman when its leader arranged his own meeting with Din El. “[Right Sector leader] Dmitry Yarosh stressed that Right Sector will oppose all [racist] phenomena, especially anti-Semitism, with all legitimate means,” the Israeli embassy declared. Sporting swastika tattoos, the battalion “flies a neo-Nazi symbol resembling a Swastika as its flag,” the New York Times’ Andrew Kramer recently reported. But when the congressman sought help from the ADL and the Wiesenthal Center in moving the proposal forward, he was rebuked. According to Biden, to continue efforts for the international support of Ukraine, the new team must quickly advance the reform agenda, including the execution of obligations for the International Monetary Fund. Ukraine also needs to implement regulations of the Minsk Accord and appoint a new reformist Attorney General. Prior to the meeting, US Vice President Joseph Biden said that Ukraine may receive $1 billion after the new government is formed based on collaboration with the IMF. The sanctions are an element of the hybrid war that the US is waging against us. They are doing this not because they do not like Russia’s ‘annexation’ of the Crimea, but because of the objective and subjective interests of the American  establishment. The US is losing its hegemony: it is already producing fewer products and exporting fewer technologies than China. China is also catching up with America in the number of scientists and engineers, and many innovative Chinese technologies are capturing world markets. China’s development rate is five times that of the US. The international system of economic entities recently set up in China exemplify the new world economic order. The economic entities that dominate in the US, serving a financial oligarchy, have destabilized the American monetary and financial system, which defaults about twice a year. The causes of the global financial crisis of 2008 have not disappeared and the American debt bubble — financial pyramids composed of derivatives and the national debt —are still growing. According to systems theory, this process cannot continue indefinitely. The American oligarchy is desperate to get rid of its debt burden, which is why it is conducting a hybrid war, not only against Russia, but against Europe and the Middle East. As always happens in a changing world economic order, the country that is losing its leadership tries to unleash a world war for control over the periphery. Since Americans consider the former Soviet space to be their financial and economic periphery, they are trying to gain control over it.   The American political establishment has been brought up on the chimeras of nineteenth century geopoliticians. American students study basic English and German geopolitical ideas of that time in political science classes.  The main question back then was how to ruin the Russian Empire, and they still look at the world through the eyes of  the XIX century ‘hawks’, when Great Britain tried to save its hegemony by starting the First World War, then lost their colonial empire after the Second World War. This is what American geopoliticians study in the State Department and the White House, continuing to look at the world through the prism of both the Cold War and British confrontations with Russia and Germany in the nineteenth century, and now the US is unleashing another world war. The combination of the objective problems of the American financial oligarchy, and the strange mindset of American geopoliticians threatens a world conflict. This has nothing to do with the Crimea. Any reason will do.   We need to act in terms of the contradictions leading the US to an aggressive stance fraught with the risk of a hybrid war with the whole world. They have chosen Russia as their main objective, and the Ukraine, occupied by them, as their main means of destruction. To survive under these conditions, maintain our sovereignty and develop our economy, we need to build a broad anti-military coalition, pursue our priority development strategy, recover our financial and economic sovereignty and pursue Eurasian integration. To prevent war, we need to realize the president’s goal of a common development area from Lisbon to Vladivostok. It is very important to convince our European partners as well as our partners in the Far East and in the South that we need to cooperate, not by blackmailing or threatening them, but through mutually beneficial projects, joining our economic potential while respecting the sovereignty of each state. Can we mend relations with the EU and how To mend cooperation with the European Union, we need to restore its sovereignty. The sight of European politicians among the crowd of Nazis at Euromaidan showed how much  European political culture has degraded. The EU leaders are not independent; they are US puppets. American media dominates Europe’s political space, embedding anti-Russian chimeras into people’ consciousness, intimidating them with a so-called Russian threat. Their politicians are forced to go with the media line provided by Washington in order to win votes. This has lead to the catastrophe we are watching today in Brussels and other European cities, which are gripped with fear as governments fail to provide security. Unfortunately, the sovereignty of Europe cannot be restored just  by booting up social consciousness. The problems did not appear out of the blue; they are the result of the European political class abandoning its national interest. Europe is facing a very difficult period of transition, during which it is not yet a partner, but Washington’s shadow. Europeans have lost their sense of direction.  They live in a mosaic, a fragmentary world that has no shared relationships. Don't know what's going on with the money thing in the US, but it's really weird. Egypt gets an annual US$1.4-billion American 'aid package', as well as 'cash flow financing' (ie extra funding, in addition to the Congress funding -- a line of credit  for buying weapons on contract from private US arms manufacturers) - NYT article 2014 here. The US government puts ordinary American taxpayers into debt so that private arms manufacturers can have contracts to fill for years to come. Where there is reason to halt financing (eg the political instability in Egypt), the US government cannot do so without causing the private American arms manufacturing businesses broken contracts, as I understand. That makes no sense to me:  the US taxpayer is subsidising private, American arms manufacturers. And the government would also be subsidising whoever the actual lender of this money is?  I'm not sure where this money's coming from when the US is in debt.  US debt clock:  here. That looks like $19-trillion?  I'm not much good with massive numbers ... but I think that's what it says. It's the poor being indebted to the rich, so that the rich can continue to get rich ... but this is a country in which the minimum wage, health care etc, are begrudged the poor. That doesn't seem right to me. Meanwhile, Europe is totally f%$#ed.  It's insane. The other day I found myself wondering if maybe Sweden was broke or something.  There's no other possible explanation for the voluntary self-destruction they're enacting. War would be crap.  Rations and censorship.

Yuriy Ivanchenko, called "a top-tier employee" of the SBU, was sent to Russia to become a false informant for the FSB. Ivanchenko's plan, it said, was to supply an FSB employee with false information, and then arrest him. "At some point, the SBU and CIA had planned to seize the FSB officer while obtaining information from Ivanchenko," the statement said, adding that Ivanchenko was trained by the CIA. Ivanchenko illegally entered Russia on a pretext of visiting relatives, and was arrested March 26 on suspicion of treason. Ukrainian law prohibits its special security forces from leaving Ukraine. The FSB detained Ivanchenko before any intelligence was compromised, it said. Welcome to Kiev 2016.   Ukraine's 2014 post-Maidan party elections passed without Natalie Jaresko. She wasn't on any of the party lists as she was not eligible to run being a US citizen. She was placed in charge of the country's finances, regardless, largely on her prestige as an 'American expert'. Now she is throwing down the gauntlet, and making a play to be handed over the running of the entire government. Her selling point? Only a "technocratic" government composed of people without "future political ambitions" can deliver Ukraine from its sorry present state:     There comes a time when politics needs to be great, so that the whole country comes together to address fundamental issues for its future.     In my opinion, only technocratic government can address these challenges. The new team must 'belong' to nobody other than the people of Ukraine.     New leaders should have no political past or, indeed, have no desire for any political future. The team must not be subject to the domination of the oligarchs or any politicians’ ‘friends’.     I am ready to assemble such a team that right now is able to work in the interest of the whole country, all its citizens, not some political or business groups. In other words, oligarch Poroshenko get out of the way so that expert Jaresko can fix the mess. Trouble with that is that Poroshenko and his crony Groysman who is the Parliament speaker and the other candidate to replace Yatsenyuk as PM have at least been elected to something, while Jaresko has never even stood as a candidate. The other trouble is that beneath the nice talk of "the whole country coming together" and "working in the interest of the whole country" there is an implicit threat in Jaresko's play:     The stakes are higher now because if Jaresko is not given the top job, she may well resign. This would have an even bigger impact than Abromavicius’ departure, as she has been so high profile during the negotiations to restructure Ukraine’s debt and in a fight with Russia over a $3bn Eurobond that Kyiv is refusing to repay. That's right. Jaresko wants to bring the whole country together (under her) and work for all its citizens (as their boss), but if she isn't given the chance then she will take her toys and go home and let Ukraine fend for itself. What would that mean in practice is that Ukraine would be cut off from any future IMF money:     She is by far the favourite of Ukraine’s international donors, who are already extremely unhappy with the lack of change or visible commitment to reform in Ukraine.     The International Monetary Fund (IMF) de facto suspended Ukraine’s stand-by agreement without formally saying so, and has not made a transfer for five months now.     The last tranche of $1.7bn was supposed to come in February following the government’s adoption of an IMF-compliant tax code, but Abromavicius’ departure started a fresh political crisis that has put everyone off.     Appointing Jaresko PM would end this crisis and should avoid the need for calling early elections. Jaresko presents herself as being the ultimate outsider beholden to no one, but actually she is looked upon favorably by Ukraine's western creditors (erroneously described as "donors"). Far from being an independent operator without a clan of her own it only so happens that her connections are to power centers outside rather than within Ukraine. Now the former US State Department official is leveraging the ties to western finance to its maximum to try and take control of the government for herself and the outside interests she represents. In fact two of her key demands for any members of the new government under her are that they have no loyalties to any Ukrainian parties:     1. Members of the government should be devoted exclusively to serving the people of Ukraine; not themselves nor their party nor vested interests. The main criterion for team members is impeccable reputation; And that they cooperate with the IMF:     4. They all should believe that Ukraine can be successful only through democratic and economic freedoms, in particular, through the implementation of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and IMF program; So Ukrainians, do you want the Poroshenko candidate, or the IMF candidate?
