Israel offensive launched - 8 July 2014
'Operation Protective Edge'
"Media coverage
Portrayals of the conflict have varied in different media outlets. In the English-speaking world, U.S. news sources were often more sympathetic to Israel, though commentators on both sides have stated that U.S. coverage of the conflict has failed to adequately provide context and background for the public to understand the issues involved. Commentators on both sides have also claimed that the media is biased either for or against Israel. British sources were more often critical of Israel. As the conflict progressed and Palestinian deaths increased, media became somewhat more critical of Israel.
ABC News received criticism when Diane Sawyer misidentified photos of rubble in Gaza as being in Israel. The progressive media criticism organization FAIR said that the mistake reflected a worldview in American media and a "false balance" between the two sides of the conflict, when in fact many more Palestinians have suffered than Israelis. Sawyer later apologized on-air for the error.
Investigative reporter Judith Miller criticized US media, and her former employer The New York Times in particular, for being unsympathetic to Israel and downplaying the context of the kidnapping and murder of Israeli teenagers.
Criticism of the BBC's coverage
In The Guardian, Owen Jones called the BBC's headline "Israel under renewed Hamas attack", "perverse as Mike Tyson punching a toddler, followed by a headline claiming that the child spat at him", and that "the macabre truth is that Israeli life is deemed by the Western media to be worth more than a Palestinian life".
In London, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow, hundreds protested outside the BBC's offices accusing the corporation of "pro-Israeli bias" in its coverage of the ongoing conflict. It claimed that news coverage was "entirely devoid of context or background". An open letter to BBC director signed by 45,000 people including Noam Chomsky, John Pilger, Ken Loach, Brian Eno and Jeremy Hardy said it would "like to remind the BBC that Gaza is under Israeli occupation and siege [and] that Israel is bombing a refugee population". The BBC has defended its coverage.
Building on research by the Glasgow University Media Group that examined the media coverage of recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Gaza, Greg Philo, research director of the university’s media unit, described how senior BBC journalists have spoken to him about being unable to get the Palestinian viewpoint across.
Social media
In the eight days leading up to Operation Protective Edge, the hashtag #GazaUnderAttack was used over 375,000 times. Often the hashtag was used on tweets using photos that claimed to show how the people are suffering due to Israeli attacks. A BBC study showed that in some cases these photos were from previous Israeli attacks, or from wars in Syria and Iraq.
A false report circulated on social media and via SMS that a rocket from Gaza had hit a petrochemical plant in Haifa. These reports cited Haaretz as their source, but turned out to be false. Haaretz denies having issued such warnings.
A photograph published by Danish journalist Allan Sørensen on Twitter caused uproar online, gathering more than 8,500 retweets. It allegedly shows Israelis in Sderot gathered on top of a hill to celebrate and cheer as they watched Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. People reportedly brought chairs, sofas, popcorn, and hookahs with them. The scene was described as "something resembling a party". Similarly, according to The Jerusalem Post, Palestinians in Hebron cheered as Gazan rockets were fired at Tel Aviv."

Hmmm... the BBC is at it again.
So check out what they've got to say -- and then look elsewhere to see what's going on.
Western media is HUGELY biased -- and it's not just limited to the situation in Gaza.

BBC forced to ask: ‘Do we favour Israel?’
...extract below...
Mishal Husain (MH): ‘Are the protesters right? Have we been biased at the BBC in favour of Israel?’--------------------------------------------------------
Greg Philo: ‘I think actually the protesters are doing the BBC a favour. I think they will help the journalists to give a better perspective.
‘I’ve had many senior journalists at the BBC saying they simply can’t get the Palestinian viewpoint across, that the perspective they can’t say is the Palestinian view that Israel is a brutal apartheid state.’
MH: ‘As you watch news coverage on the BBC and other broadcasters, what’s the full picture you get of the coverage of this conflict?’
GP: ‘Well, the Palestinian perspective is just not there. The Israelis are on twice as much. But the Palestinian view and the historical analysis of the events is that they were displaced from their land, they are living under military rule.
‘People don’t even understand that it’s a military occupation that Palestinians are subject to. They don’t know about the economic blockade, they don’t know about the consequences of that on Palestinian life.”
MH: ‘We have, and we do have, many reports from Gaza…reporting on the casualties, reporting from the morgues.’
GP: ‘ The issue is the roots of the conflict. The problem with the coverage is that it doesn’t refer to the history of it. That the Palestinians are a displaced people, that they were forced to flee, that they lost their homes and lands, that the occupation and the way it is conducted is illegal, that they lose their water, that they had their lives, in effect, stolen from them.
‘Even if the BBC can’t give the Palestinian view, it should at least respect international law. The BBC should be reporting the international judgements on things like the Wall.’
…’Unless there’s a proper discussion of the root causes of this, unless the politicians are made to confront the history of this and confront seriously the conditions under which are they are reduced, unless they understand and are made to confront the history of it – the displacement of a people – until the politicians face that, how can we have a proper debate?’

Ukraine govt gets media free ride - lobbying against Russians on the eve of EU Brussels pow-wow - US calls for santions to protect their grab in Ukraine

COMMENT
BBC referred to Charles Heyman as 'defence analyst' and said he 'edits a book'.
Well, that's downgrading a man who is a distinguished career soldier - who served actively around the world - and a man who is also a military educator.
Heyman's said a Sam-6 was more likely to have been used. So why are the BBC even speculating -- and the Australians following suit?
The SAM-6 are surface to air misiles, mounted on tank-like military vehicles with a big trio rockets mounted on top (that look like giant pencils pointed skywards).
Notice how the anti-Russian brigade get a hearing and it's all about their accusations getting an airing. Meanwhile, the people killed are ignored.

Ukraine says Russian army officers fighting with pro-Moscow rebels in the east of the country
Posted Tue 15 Jul 2014, 10:59am AEST
[INS AND OUTS OF UKRAINE ACCUSATIONS .... WHICH ARE NOT SUBSTANTIATED ...
WAR OF WORDS ... SEVERAL HUNDRED KILLED ... BUT NO MENTION OF CIVILIANS UKRAINE PUPPET GOVT IS KILLING]
"Information has ... been confirmed that Russian staff officers are taking part in military operations against Ukrainian forces," Mr Poroshenko said.
Mr Poroshenko made similar complaints of Russian incursions on Sunday to the European Union (EU) with an eye to pushing the bloc to exert greater pressure, and possibly more sanctions, on Moscow.
Mr Poroshenko told his security chiefs that government forces, which lost 23 men in a rocket attack on an army camp last Friday, were now facing a new Russian missile system and there would have to be a change in tactics.
He gave no details. [SO THIS IS JUST AIRING UKRAINE'S MANY ACCUSATIONS IN THE LEAD UP TO HE BRUSSELS POW-WOW ... AND SNEAKY OLD JOE BIDEN PROBABLY TOLD HIM WHAT TO SAY. LOL!.]
National and Security Council spokesman [NATO'S ACCUSATIONS OF RUSSIAN TROOPS AT BORDER -- REPEATED OFTEN IN MEDIA.]
Moscow's response to the cross-border shelling and the Ukrainian reports of Russian troops being moved up to the border raised again the prospect of Russian intervention, after weeks in which president Vladimir Putin had appeared intent on disengaging, pulling back tens of thousands of troops he had massed at the frontier.
A spokesman for the so-called Luhansk People's Republic said 30 volunteer fighters had been killed in Ukrainian fire on Oleksandrivka, a village to the east of the town, Russia's Interfax news agency said.
Missile that took down plane was likely Russian: officials
As military action continued on Monday near the rebel-controlled border town of Luhansk, Ukraine's defence minister said a Ukrainian AN-26 transport plane, taking part in the military campaign against the rebels, had been shot down by a rocket which was "probably" fired from Russian territory.
[BBC CITED UK CAREER MILITARY EXPERT'S OPINION - HEYMAN SAID THAT THIS WAS UNLIKELY.]
[UKRAINE POINT FINGER AT RUSSIANS; DENYING CHARGES LEVELLED AT THEM]
And he again rejected Russian charges that Ukraine forces had fired a shell over the border killing a Russian man on Sunday - an incident that Moscow has described as an "aggressive act" which would have "irreversible consequences".
"The (rebel) fighters systematically fire mortars and shoot into Russian territory, which killed a Russian citizen."
[UKRAINE POINT FINGER AT 'REBELS', DENYING CHARGES LEVELLED AT THEM]
In a weekend of fierce combat, Ukraine said its warplanes had inflicted heavy losses on the pro-Russian separatists in air strikes on their positions, including an armoured convoy which Kiev said had crossed the border from Russia. [OF COURSE, THIS IS WHAT THEY'D SAY. LOL. THEY WANT US INTERVENTION. ALSO, WHAT THEY DON'T SAY IS THAT UKRAINE GOVT HAS KILLED CIVILIANS.] [AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE 'REBELS'. THESE ARE UKRAINIAN PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR THEIR PRINCIPLES AND THEIR HOMELAND -- & THEY DESERVE SUPPORT.]
Mr Poroshenko's office said Kiev would present documentary proof of incursions from Russia to the international community via diplomats. [SO WHERE IS THIS 'PROOF' -- RIGHT NOW THIS IS JUST UNSUBSTANTIATED ACCUSATIONS, DENIALS - SPECULATION ANTI-RUSSIAN SPECULATION IN THE MEDIA, PAINTING RUSSIANS BLACK.]
[NO WAY WOULD I BELIEVE ANYTHING THAT COMES OUT OF THE UKRAINE US-BACKED CAMP -- WE KNOW THE US RECORD AROUND THE WORLD. NO MATTER WHAT THESE US-BACKED CLOWNS PRESENT, IT WILL BE SUSPECT. LOOK AT THE WORLDWIDE DIRTY DEEDS DONE NOT SO CHEAP.]---------------------------------------------------------------
But Russia kept up pressure on Kiev over the cross-border shell incident.
A Russian newspaper, citing a source close to the Kremlin, said on Monday that Moscow was considering the possibility of pinpoint strikes on Ukraine in retaliation.

Ukraine conflict: Jet bombs rebel-held town of Snizhne
A warplane has attacked a rebel-held town with rockets in eastern Ukraine, shattering homes and killing at least four people.
Rockets struck the town of Snizhne in Donetsk region around 07:00 (04:00 GMT), hitting a block of flats and a tax office.
The rebels blamed the attack on Ukraine's air force - a claim denied by Ukrainian sources.
Security forces have been pushing the rebels back to the city of Donetsk.
Fighting has also raged in the neighbouring region of Luhansk, with rockets hitting a southern suburb of Luhansk city on Monday.
Nato says it has observed a significant increase of Russian troops along the Ukrainian border, bringing their number to up to 12,000. Russia had an estimated 40,000 troops in the area two months ago before pulling them back.
...
Ukrainian officials have said that only Russia could have shot down a transport plane near the border on Monday but a Western defence expert cast doubt on the claim.
On Wednesday, EU leaders will discuss the possibility of further sanctions against Russia at their summit in Brussels. [SANCTIONS! SANCTIONS! - TYPICAL. ITS SO THAT WHEN THEY ESCALATE SANCTIONS ... THEY CAN 'JUSTIFY' THEM. LOL. IT'S THE BULD-UP OF THE DRAMA]
...
Local officials said four people had been killed while a rebel spokesman told Russia's Interfax news agency that "about 10" civilians had been killed when a single Ukrainian jet fired five rockets.
Ukrainian Security Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko confirmed that the town had been bombed, with damage and casualties.
But he told reporters in Kiev that the town had been attacked by an unknown aircraft with the aim of discrediting Ukrainian government forces. [WE'RE STILL WAITING FOR EVIDENCE.]
Ukrainian defence analyst Dmitry Tymchuk argued on Facebook that the attack could only have been carried out by Russian jets as Ukrainian planes had carried out no flights since the An-26 transport plane was downed on Monday. [BIG ON ACCUSATION BUT SCANT ON EVIDENCE.]
It would be the first known occasion when a Russian warplane had become involved in the conflict, if true.
[BUT YOUR CAREER MILITARY EXPERT (HEYMAN) DISMISSED THIS, SO WHY IS IT EVEN A SUBJECT OF THIS VAGUE SPECULATION? ... SOWING CONFUSION? BEFUDDLING READER? PAINTING RUSSIANS AS AGGRESSORS?]
Plane dispute
In Monday's incident, Ukrainian officials said the An-26 had been hit at an altitude of 6,500m (21,325ft) and must have been targeted with "a more powerful missile" than a shoulder-carried missile, "probably fired" from Russia.
When fully loaded, the plane can fly at 7,600m. [NOT ACCORDING TO THE WIKI ... 7,500m is the 'service ceiling' [wikipedia]
[BUT, AGAIN, THIS IS DIVERSION...IT DOESN'T MATTER.
However, defence analyst Charles Heyman, who edits a book called Armed Forces of the European Union, questioned the likelihood of the plane flying at high altitude.----------------------------------------------------------
He told the Associated Press news agency the missile was more likely to have been fired by rebels.
"I doubt the transport plane was flying at 6,500m," he said. "That doesn't make sense. The higher you fly, the more it costs, and the plane would have had to be pressurised. It was probably shot down using Sam-6 missiles owned by the rebels, which they have quite a few of."
Mr Lysenko said two of the plane's crew who survived appeared to have been captured by the rebels. Other members of the crew who did not manage to parachute to safety are believed to have been killed, with human remains found in the wreckage.
Rockets struck Luhansk's southern suburb of Mirny on Monday, setting cars on fire in a car park, as an unverified video posted on YouTube appears to show.
Both government and rebel forces are known to have multiple-rocket launchers in the region.

High civilian death toll feared in rocket attacks in UkraineEurope
15.07.2014
Kiev/Moscow (dpa) - At least 12 civilians were killed in two days of rocket attacks in eastern Ukraine, authorities said Tuesday.
Four people were killed and four injured Tuesday when a house collapsed in Snizhne, a city between Donetsk and the border with Russia, the Donetsk regional administration said.
The administration did not say anything about the reason for the collapse, but local media reported Ukrainian forces had attacked separatist rebels with airstrikes in the area.
A rebel representative, Konstantin Knyrik, claimed 10 civilians had been killed by the airstrike.
