Victoria Bateman had written on her breasts and stomach ‘Brexit leaves Britain naked’. The academic arrived at the faculty’s meeting last Wednesday where director of studies across all the university’s colleges as around 30 economists discussed teaching material and courses. Ms Bateman, a lecturer has researched the development of the European economy, sat at the two-hour meeting without anyone mentioning her nudity they just went on with a normal meeting about tripos and marking. Nigel Knight, director of studies at Churchill College and the chair of the meeting, glanced at her and then said to his secretary: “I think we need some cups for the coffee” and everyone else just stared straight ahead. His remarks, however, are understood to have taken place before the meeting started. Ms Bateman, who is an economics fellow at Gonville and Caius College, posed naked for a nude portrait of her by the painter Anthony Connolly last year. A source who took part in the meeting told the Daily Telegraph: “It is well known to the faculty that she has posed naked but obviously the behaviour here was different. One thing is to pose naked and another to show up naked. “This was a standard meeting about the teaching of economics and we moved away from her state of dress. We remained silent on that issue and managed to get through the agenda in the meeting.” Asked if she was allowed to stay naked throughout the whole meeting, the source said: “Nobody was mistreated in any way. Ms Bateman has been openly opposed to the UK leaving the EU. In an article for Bloomberg View earlier last month, she wrote: “The impact would be sizable. Earlier this year David Cameron, the Prime Minister, led calls for the university to take more ethnic minority students as figures revealed Oxford had only taken 27 black undergraduate students in 2014. It followed calls from the Rhodes Must Fall movement to ‘decolonise’ the university’s curriculum. 'Suitable subjects' The university has commissioned dozens of new portraits at a cost of £900 each, the Sunday Times reported. Staff and students have been ask to nominate ‘suitable subjects’ by the end of this week, it added. Separately, colleges already have new pictures and paintings of prominent figures, including the portrait of Libby Lane, the first female Anglican bishop, at St Peter’s College. Lucy Banda Sichone and Norman Manley, two Rhodes scholars and activists, have also been placed on the walls of Rhodes House, it was reported. A photo of Naomi Wolf, the feminist and Rhodes scholar, is expected to go on display in Rhodes House, the newspaper added. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Ms Wolf said: "In my college, New College, there are portraits of men everywhere. "While pictures are not the same as gender or race equality, I do not think this is trivial. If all you see are white men, white men, white men, it is very hard to believe that people in your society think you have a place in history. Changing iconography helps to change how you see history.” Portraits female journalists Amelia Gentleman and Hari Kunzru have also been put up at Wadham College. Lord Macdonald, Wadham's warden, told the publication: "I want to address the predominance of portraits of white men. These are grand figures and they deserve their place in our history.  But Wadham is proud of its diversity and it's time to reflect this in the portraits that adorn our walls." The paintings and photographs are part of Oxford University’s Diversifying Portraiture project, which was launched in 2014. Its objective was to collect 250 existing portraits of those who had "challenged the stereotypes and preconceptions of their times" and putting them online. Matthew Doyle, from south Croydon, provoked anger on social media after he tweeted about the encounter with the woman. He said the woman gave a “mealy-mouthed” response after he demanded she “explain” the Brussels attacks. Police charged him with an offence under the Public Order Act on Thursday. But on Friday night they were forced to withdraw the accusations, admitting they had no power to charge him in the first place. Doyle said police had bowed to a social media row. “In reality, the Met added ammunition to whatever I said,” he said. “Concurrently, their press office should be cautioned about issuing largely self-congratulatory statements and then being forced to backtrack.” He added: “They smelt blood, but got egg on both their face and reputation.” Doyle had been due to appear at Camberwell Green magistrates court on Friday. But the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) later confirmed it did not agree with the Met’s decision, adding that the force did not have the legal power to bring the charges. Police then released a second statement announcing that the charges against Doyle had been dropped and admitting they had had no power to charge him in the first place. It said: “Following discussion with the Crown Prosecution Service, Mr Doyle is no longer charged with the offence and will not be appearing at court. “Police may not make charging decisions on offences under Section 19 of the Public Order Act.” The CPS guidance on its website about racist and religious crime states that a charge under the act can only be prosecuted with consent of the attorney general and requires a referral to the counter-terrorism division to be dealt with by a specialist prosecutor. The offence carries a maximum jail term of seven years. Doyle’s tweet on Wednesday read: “I confronted a Muslim woman yesterday in Croydon. I asked her to explain Brussels. She said ‘Nothing to do with me’. A mealy mouthed reply.” Initially, Twitter users mocked Doyle for his tweet, posting hundreds of parody versions, however later tweets where Doyle referred to Muslims as “towel heads” were met with anger. Asked if he regretted his original tweets, he said: “I said how I felt at that moment in time. If anyone fanned the flames, it was the nameless Twitter trolls who smelt a lynching on their hands. “For the Met to bow to social media rows, it is not only foolish of them but I will be making a complaint against them and [claiming for] damages for trashing my flat, taking all my electronic stuff from my flat and forcing me to leave London.” He said his case had been “badly handled” and complained of his treatment at the police station. He said: “Denied a shave, shower, food etc, I was stripped of any dignity to appear at Camberwell court without looking like a dishevelled hobo, which I am not.” Doyle also explained the details of his interaction with the unnamed woman. He claims he had a “polite conversation” with a British Muslim after approaching her on Wednesday morning. “We had a polite conversation and moved on. I thanked her for talking to me,” Doyle said. Menk tweets out statements such as: “Learn to make the most of each day. Once over, it’ll never return. So be wary of what you put in a day. Fill it with good deeds & kindness.” No doubt it was with such sentiments in mind that Captain Mona Shindy, the navy’s most senior Muslim officer and the naval chief strategic adviser on Islamic affairs, at one stage describing him as “a source of wisdom”, retweeted Menk’s advice not to get “rude abusive or insulting”. More discreet are his views on homosexuals, whom he calls “filthy”. A recent tour of British universities was abandoned after videos of sermons surfaced in which Menk claimed gays “are worse than animals”. There is no suggestion Shindy endorses Menk’s views on gays, but it neatly illustrates the trap of social media for a member of the Australian Defence Force. Shindy’s Twitter account @navyislamic was shut down by Chief of Navy Tim Barrett in December after tweets endorsed the Australian Grand Mufti’s response to the Paris terror attacks, made gibes at Tony Abbott and questioned Australian foreign policy in Iraq. The social media and political activities policy of the ADF demands strict political neutrality from members when commenting in a capacity identifying them as ADF employees.  [comment:  no such thing as 'strict political neutrality' -- even benign schtick & infomercial messaging IS POLITICAL & IDEOLOGICAL dissemination / influence / opinion shaping] How does an organisation that has to be absolutely neutral in its political positioning exist in the politically febrile world of social media? According to the navy, “the position … was established to help improve Navy’s understanding of the cultural issues of the many Muslim navies/nations that it operates with … Capt Shindy also provides advice on how Navy can become a more attractive employer from an Islamic perspective as part of our broader diversity approach.” At the end of last year, the ADF had 103 permanent members who identified as Muslim, 26 of them in the navy. Rodger Shanahan (no relation), a research fellow at the Lowy Institute and a former army officer, believes Shindy clearly crossed the line of what is acceptable political comment from an ADF officer. “She showed poor judgment, stepped over the line and should’ve known better,” he tells The Weekend Australian. He believes the Twitter controversy points to problems the ADF faces in its determination to have a social media presence. “The military is not really allowed to enter into” all the “meaty stuff that makes social media ­interesting and dynamic”, Shanahan says, so “it almost becomes an infomercial”. The second problem is the nebulous nature of Shindy’s role as an Islamic cultural adviser. Shanahan says defence forces can only “be concerned with operational not social outcomes” and it’s unclear what operational benefit is being provided by the role. He claims the ADF would be better off following a US model of employing foreign area officers, who can be of any religion but trained in particular geographic areas to offer cultural advice. Neil James, executive director of the Australia Defence Association, says the ADF needs a diversity policy in the interests of a representative workforce, but the Islamic cultural advisory role has failed. “I think the experiment of an Islamic cultural adviser hasn’t worked. They do have indigenous cultural advisers and they do work, but they are advising on culture largely and not religion. In this case they did not have a definition of what a cultural adviser actually did.” Another problem, says James, are the inconsistencies in the ADF crackdowns for breaches of its social media and political commentary policies. “One of the problems they have had is that what you might loosely call the right-wing commentators have been punished and what you might call left-wing commentators haven’t been.” He also says the navy’s excuse for closing the @navyislamic account — that it was attracting “contentious comments” — was disingenuous given that many would regard Shindy’s comments as contentious. “You have comments on a navy website which a lot of people would consider an apologia for Islamist terrorism,” James says. While accepting the Shindy case is very different from that of Bernard Gaynor — who was sacked for making a statement about military marching in Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras — experts and former ADF members accept it puts the ADF in a bind over what is considered acceptable political commentary. The ADF is appealing Gaynor’s recent victory in the Federal Court, which found his decommissioning was invalid on the grounds his comment was made as a private citizen and was protected under the implied right to political communication. Gaynor has been a long-time critic of Shindy and transgender Group Captain Cate McGregor. Beyond servers, the most popular GNU/Linux system distributing for the desktop is called Ubuntu, and it uses Debian's core contributions. By scope of deployment, Ian Murdock was one of the biggest contributors to the Internet in the world. Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds have shipped more widely deployed software, but Ian Murdock certainly exhibited a scale of contribution that approaches their level. Over the past week Ian had his home invaded without cause. He was kidnapped at gunpoint and falsely charged with assaulting the officer who assaulted him. He subsequently committed suicide. Many people are commenting that he wasn't in a lucid state when he did so. I'm not so sure. His chances of seeing a California prison were very high. California state prisons are the worst in the nation. His chances of losing a significant bit of his assets to the state were also high. Ian had a lot of assets. Rather than endure torture in prison and a loss of his assets to those that were wronging him he killed himself. He was also hoping to catalyze retaliation in revenge against his tormentors, and his death will mean nothing if we don't make it so. Before we go any further, let's examine the data. [ GRAPHIC ] This is a chart of various economic sectors and the total market cap of the associated companies. As you can see, of all the major sectors only financials exceed computing in value. I'm going to say pretty confident that none of them exceed computing in actual social contribution. This year, the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act passed. It was regarded as a terrible thing and opposed by the entire computing industry. It passed anyways. Computing is twice the market value of the energy industry. When is the last time a bill universally opposed by the energy industry has passed? Never. Such a thing is unthinkable. It does not happen. Utilities, the smallest sector on this list, a fifth of computing's value, has a gigantic multiple of its political power. Computing is regularly made the bitch of the media industry through legislation, which is too small to even appear in this chart. The food/staples retailing industry is very small in comparison to computing, but I quite assure you that in my home of Northwest Arkansas, the cops have a record of every family with a Walmart executive in it and they know damn well better not to fuck with them. Even a low level Walmart executive isn't going to get beaten, humiliated, and falsely charged in the Ozarks. It simply won't happen because the cops know who runs that place. In contrast, one of the most important contributors to computing on the earth just had that happen to him in San Francisco of all places. The telecom services industry is relatively tiny by comparison to computing, but it still petitioned the government to violate my rights and the protests of the entire computing industry did not prevent it. Ian is dead for the same reason Lance and Jonathan and Aaron are: computing, as an industry, has no will to power. Computing is filled with nerds who want to focus on their own shit and think politics is stupid. They are right, politics is stupid, and I had the same worldview up until the point a gun was pointed in my face, my home was reduced to rubble, and I was being beaten and starved in solitary confinement. Computing's lack of will to power is especially tragic not only because it has the highest potential for power, but because the big players of the game realize that it does. Regardless of the apolitical nature of the industry it is being dragged into Marxist struggles anyways. Over at Status451, @maradydd has a brilliant analysis of the feminist part of the cultural Marxist ecosystem that has now turned its eye towards the technology industry, but her reduction of cultural Marxism to a simple protection racket is flawed, because feminists are not the only force agitating against the tech industry, and well funded companies are not the only target. The other thing that happened over the past week is that antifa was out in force at Chaos Communications Congress. If you are unfamiliar with this, it is the most prestigious gathering of hackers in the world. It is not something done for profit, but for the exchange of ideas amongst hacker luminaries. Unlike feminism, antifa has no profit model in this space, and even if it did, the CCC is not a well capitalized company. It is a loose association of hackers. Antifa at CCC took the chance to protest emerson's talk as racist. I might be a white nationalist and have been so in public since 2008, but if I were to give a talk at CCC I don't see how I could even make it racist. These are technical talks about real world software deployments. The talk itself was about emerson's travels to Sierra Leone at great personal risk to help use open source software to assist with the eradication of the Ebola virus. Why would they choose this talk? DuBois Institute, a leading black-studies department, argues in the current issue of Harvard Magazine that "abolishing the white race" is "so desirable that some may find it hard to believe" that anyone other than "committed white supremacists" would oppose it. In excerpts appearing this week in newspapers nationwide, Mr. Ignatiev, who is white, writes that "every group within white America," including "labor unionists, ethnic groups, college students, schoolteachers, taxpayers and white women" has at one time or another "advanced its particular and narrowly defined interests at the expense of black people as a race." Mr. Ignatiev pledges in the essay that his journal, Race Traitor, intends to "keep bashing the dead white males, and the live ones, and the females, too, until the social construct known as 'the white race' is destroyed not 'deconstructed' but destroyed." His colleagues at Harvard seem not to take his proposal entirely seriously. Others cite the article as an example of Harvard's institutional racism. Sara Stillman, assistant to the publisher of Harvard Magazine, says there's clearly some "misunderstanding" about what Mr. Ignatiev means by the inflammatory language. Asked in a 1997 interview with the New York Times if he hates his own white skin, Mr. Ignatiev said, "No, but I want to abolish the privileges." "The white race is like a private club based on one huge assumption that all those who look white, are, whatever their complaints or reservations, fundamentally loyal to the race. Among the "privileges" of being white, according to Race Traitor, are not being followed by security in stores, not being harassed by police, having easier access to better schools, jobs and housing, and not being asked whether skin color or affirmative action got you a job. In the essay in Harvard Magazine, Mr. Ignatiev says he always expected "bewilderment" at his views from "people who still think of race as biology." "We frequently get letters accusing us of being 'racists' just like the KKK, and have even been called a 'hate group.'" he wrote. Mr. Ignatiev attempts to clarify how he could be seeking to abolish the white race without calling for genocide. "Our standard response is to draw an analogy with anti-royalism: to oppose monarchy does not mean killing the king; it means getting rid of crowns, thrones, royal titles, etc." Abolition of a monarchy has often been marked by killing the monarch and sometimes his family members; for example, England in 1649, France in 1792, Russia in 1917 and Iraq in 1958. Even those nations that have abolished kings or emperors without regicide generally have forced the monarch into exile. Mr. Ignatiev grew up in a Philadelphia family that he says was devoid of racial bias. As a child, he swam at a free community pool, where he was the only white patron. He says his parents refused to pay a $1 fee that was designed to keep other public pools all-white. Mr. Ignatiev's parents, Jewish immigrants from Russia, were not college educated, but he attended the University of Pennsylvania, dropping out after three years. He worked in a Chicago steel mill and in factories that made farm equipment and electrical parts for two decades. At the steel mill, he helped organize strikes and protests by the predominantly black work force. He was laid off from the steel mill in 1984, a year after he was arrested on charges of throwing a paint bomb at a strike-breaker's car. He set up Marxist discussion groups in the early 1980s. In 1985, Mr. Ignatiev was accepted to the Harvard Graduate School of Education without an undergraduate degree.
