Barbarism of U.S. Imperial Wars is Unmatched By Prof. James Petras Global Research, October 03, 2016  “What Russia is sponsoring and doing [in Syria] is not counter-terrorism it is barbarism” Samantha Power, US Representative to the United Nations The US representative to the United Nations, Ambassador ‘Ranting Sam’ Samantha Power, accused the Russian and Syrian governments of ‘barbarism’, claiming Moscow or Damascus had attacked an unarmed United Nations humanitarian convoy delivering aid to civilians in Aleppo.  No evidence was presented.  Rants and threats do not require facts or proof; they only require vehement emotional ejaculations and compliant mass propaganda organs. ‘Barbarians’, to be clear, evoke images of leaders and groups, which abjure all civilized norms and laws.  They only respond to armed force. In the present context Power’s charges of barbarism against Russia and Syria was used to justify the US aerial bombardment of a Syrian army outpost, which killed and maimed almost 200 government troops engaged in combating ISIS terrorists and jihadi invaders. In other words, accusing Syrian soldiers of ‘barbarism’ was Ambassador Power’s cynical way of dehumanizing the young victims of an earlier and deliberate US war crime. Let’s analyze the appropriate context for the use and abuse of the language of ‘barbarism’ – and its rightful application. Barbarism:  the Deed Over the past decade and a half, the US and its allies have invaded, occupied, killed, wounded and dispossessed over ten million people, in countries from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.  Military and civilian officials have systematically destroyed entire economies, fostered ethno-religious wars, undermined ancient community and family ties and placed corrupt political puppets in power. Promoted by the US, torture, arbitrary arrest and incarceration have become the norm creating lawless and chaotic societies, which had once been productive and stable.  The shredding of  social structures has provokes massive population flight, with millions of desperate refugees fleeing invasions, wars and total society breakdown.  The result of these deliberate imperial policy decisions has been emptied cities and neighborhoods, broken families, destroyed lives and futures for many millions of young Arabs and Muslims. As the human toll mounts and Western Europe is flooded with the results of US aggressive wars, the imperialists have sharpened their shrill rhetoric, labeling all of their adversaries and critics as ‘accomplices in war crimes’, and ‘barbarians’. The greater and more sustained the policy of wanton imperial pillage, the more intense the frustration of its leaders over its ultimate failures, and the greater the recourse of its ‘diplomats’ to vituperative language. [vituperative = harshly critical / scathing ] Barbarism in Search of Barbarians: [DIAGRAM AT SOURCE] The principal adversaries to US aggression, Russia, China and Iran, have not invaded any sovereign countries, nor have they provoked the desperate flight of millions of refugees.  Russia was invited to aid its Syrian government ally confronting an invasion of terrorist mercenaries who are intent on dividing the country.  Crimea peacefully re-joined Russia via elections.  Moscow rejected playing any military role in support of Western wars against Iraq, Yemen and Libya.  None of this rose to the level of US-EU barbarism. In Asia, the West has invaded and devastated Viet Nam, the Philippines and Afghanistan.  Japan, now a US ally, had invaded China, Korea and Southeast Asia.  China for its part has not engaged in any imperial war of conquest for centuries. Iran has not invaded any country in modern times.  On the contrary, Iraq invaded Tehran in the 1980’s with US support and waged a decade-long war which caused millions of casualties. In truth, if waging wars, staging invasions, destroying whole societies and causing millions of deaths are the measure of barbarism, then the US, Europe and Japan have been clearly barbaric. To claim otherwise and follow the ranting script of Ambassador Samantha Power is to enter into a tunnel of hallucinations where the language of liberal values embellishes truly barbarian acts. The entire language of politics has been perverted and converted into an artifice of self-delusion.  Terrorist militias are re-packaged as ‘rebels’ and ‘moderates’, spreading barbarism from the imperial Western center to the periphery.  The deliberate spread of terrorism is itself a barbaric deed, which degrades the status of Western powers. Conclusion In ancient Greece, the barbarians were those outside of the empire who did not speak the language of civilization.  They were savage invaders seeking to pillage the wealth and culture of the empire.  Today the barbarians emerge from inside the empire and spread outward.  The imperial leaders have engaged in serial wars of destruction and pillage, even as their own societies and economies wallow in ignorance, misery, debt, addiction and criminality.  Imperial barbarians devastate whole cultures, erasing the great historical legacy of ancient civilizations like Iraq and Syria, while imposing their culture of morons, drugs and electronic gadgets, which has already infantilized its own population. The empire of barbarians is infested with moneychangers and corrupt speculators.  They have debased the entire legal system and legislative bodies.  The public space has become a private latrine for the elite, closed to any real public discourse and debate. Electoral spectacles, rather than reasoned debates, undermine republican principles.  Imperial conquerors, enmeshed in a military metaphysic, cannot reconstruct a devastated society into a productive colony, nor can they learn or benefit from the best and brightest among its captives, as Rome did with Greece, because it has sown such destruction and salted the very soil under the feet of its conquered peoples. The barbarian-imperial world order is constantly at war with ‘others’ and can never assimilate and learn from the precious human treasures it has so wantonly destroyed.  It rules by terror abroad and deceit at home.  As so crudely displayed by the imperial rants of Ambassador Samantha Power, its oratory at international forums reflect the hysteria of mediocre functionaries:  mindless barbarians raving among themselves in marbled echo chambers. In the end, the imperial barbarians will be besieged by their own fleeing vassals and puppets.  When they finally confront their own decay and internal dissolution they have to decide whether to engage in a last global conflagration or dismantle the imperial barbaric order and choose justice, law and civilization. I arrived in August that year as a volunteer surgeon to help the war victims of Lebanon. The people in Lebanon were wounded, made homeless and lost precious friends and families as the result of ten weeks of ruthless bombardment. That was the Operation Peace for Galilee launched by Sharon who was then the Defence Minister of Israel in June 1982. No one knew how many were killed as the result of that offensive – the London newspapers estimated a thirty thousand with many times more made homeless. When a ceasefire was agreed with the evacuation of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Sharon broke that ceasefire and drove tanks under air-cover launching a land invasion into Lebanon’s capitol Beirut. Part of the tanks sealed Sabra Shatilla and prevented the helpless civilian victims from escaping, while sending in Israel’s allies into the camps to carry out the most brutal massacre of defenceless women, children and old people under Israel’s watch. The blame was quickly and deliberately shifted to the Lebanese as perpetrators of the massacres, so that today no one can mention that massacre without blaming the Lebanese Phalange, yet forgetting the Israeli organisers of that event. I worked in Gaza Hospital in Sabra Shatilla during the massacre trying to save the lives of a few dozen people, but outside the hospital hundreds were killed. My patients and I knew that Sharon and his officers were in control, and without them the massacre would not be possible. The residents of Sabra Shatilla could at least have escaped. Now more than 30 years later, we know that the killers were brought in by Israeli armoured cars and tanks, obeyed Israeli commands, their paths lit by Israeli military flares, and some of them also wore Israeli uniforms. The mutilated bodies of the victims were thrown into mass graves by Israeli bulldozers. This Sharon continued on to be Israeli Prime Minister, and built the Wall which imprisoned the Palestinians in the West Bank. Sharon’s Wall cut through their lands,  separating people from their homes, children from their schools, farmers from their orchards,  patients from hospitals, husbands from wives, and children from parents. He marched into the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem 2000 with fully armed Israeli soldiers and tried to have the West believe that his intention was for peace. He was responsible for other massacres such as in Jenin, Qibya and Khan Yunis just to name a few. The older generation in Khan Yunis in Gaza remembers that he killed all the grown men in the massacre of 1956 and left only the women and children to bury the dead. I thought these facts should be publicised. Those who eulogise Sharon in his role of building Israel should also remember that he built his nation over the dead bodies of the Palestinian people, and the continued dispossession of those who are still alive. The SWHF was launched in 2014 by Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO) to recognise and celebrate the many contributions of women to Singapore’s development, and to share the stories of these outstanding women so as to inspire others, especially younger Singaporeans. SCWO will mark International Women’s Day 2016 by inducting 14 honourees to the SWHF on 18 March (Friday). The 14 women comprise two Supreme Court judges, six sportswomen, two food personalities, a diplomat, an activist/advocate, a medical aid worker, and a community/social worker. Dr Ang, 67, a self-imposed exile, is one of the 14 who are due to be inducted into the Singapore Women's Hall of Fame on Friday for her work in Palestinian refugee camps in the 1980s and 1990s Dr Ang is the co-Founder and Patron of British Charity Medical Aid for Palestinians. She is also the widow of Singapore exile, Francis Khoo*. However, Dr Ang is unable to obtain the special travel document to come to Singapore for the induction ceremony on Friday. The documents are needed to assure her that her Singapore citizenship will not be stripped when she enters Singapore. Replying to Straits Times through an email, Dr Ang wrote, "I can come into Singapore with a British passport, but unless there is assurance that the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) will not strip me of my Singapore citizenship, I must not risk it," An MHA spokesman said the Government does not allow citizens to hold dual citizenship, and will not issue travel documents if they have not renounced their foreign citizenship. She said Dr Ang's 2012 travel document was issued with a "clear understanding that she would resolve her dual citizenship status expeditiously". ICA said that it has reminded Dr Ang to do so four times - the last reminder was last month, on 4 February, a spokesman said. "ICA will process her request for such a document, once she shows proof she has started the process of renouncing her British citizenship." Ambassador Bilahari Kausikan who is currently Ambassador-at-Large and Policy Adviser in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) made a comment on his Facebook account saying,  "As she is travelling on a UK passport the presumption must be that she has UK citizenship and yet she is asking ICA for an assurance that she will not lose her Singapore citizenship if she visits Singapore on a UK passport. How can ICA give her such an assurance? She should well know it is impossible for ICA. What makes her so special that an exception to the policy must be made just for her?" Dr Ang explains her reasons for dual citizenship The Online Citizen contacted Dr Ang this morning, for her to answer more about the reasons for the dual citizenship and the reluctance to surrender either of the two citizenship. Why were you issued with a British passport? I applied for British citizenship in order to get a passport to meet my father in Johore Bahru. That was after my mother died in 1990. By then I have already lived as a refugee in the UK for 13 years. I had a refugee travel document which restricts travel to many countries including Europe unless a visa was granted. Under the ASEAN agreement I could not travel to Malaysia either. When my mother was dying I asked the Singapore Government permission to come home to see her, that request was turned down, and I was unable to see her nor attend her funeral. I then knew that I would not be able to see my father since it is difficult for him to come to UK, and he was growing old, so for that reason I applied for a British passport. It also made my travelling to work with refugees in Lebanon less risky, since up to then I was travelling on a refugee document myself. For instance at the Sabra and Shatilla massacre of 1982 as a refugee I was not given British consulate protection, and also application to do work with the Palestinians involve lengthy waits for visas, and long questioning at airports due to my being a refugee even with valid visas. Airport securities in the Middle East were and still is very cynical about allowing refugees entry into their countries and often will detain me to check with their embassies in UK that I was truly who I claim to be. For the sake of my father and for the sake of being able to be a doctor to the Palestinians I applied for a British passport. That was in in 1990 after my mother died. The passport was granted in 1992. Why can't you choose to surrender your British passport? As you can see from my letter to the SCWO I have lived and work in the UK for 39 years and if I renounced my British citizenship I immediately lose my right of abode, right to work and right to travel. I therefore can be deported, lose my job as a surgeon, and cannot visit Palestine and Lebanon. I will be giving up what I have been doing all these years for a Singapore Travel Document allowing me to visit Singapore and look for a job and a place to stay. I am prepared to do that but how am I even to do that when I do not even have a Singapore Travel Document to come home to sort these issues out? Why hold onto the Singapore citizenship, given that you have been out of Singapore so many years? I will not give up my Singapore Citizenship since I did not voluntarily leave Singapore but was arrested by the ISD and released to try to persuade Francis to come back to surrender himself for detention and questioning by the ISD. Under detention and continuous interrogation I agreed to do so. But I know Francis was never a Communist so why should I put pressure on him to be subjected to imprisonment and torture to confess that he was one? Just so that I can continue to live and work in comfort in Singapore? The thought suddenly felt so revolting that by the time I met him at Heathrow airport I decided to join him and filed for political asylum. With that I began my 39 years of exile. I remain a Singapore citizen so long as I do not come home. That was the deal. Not attending the SCWO is disappointing, but not as painful as being unable to see my parents and my mother-in-law when they were dying and not being allowed to attend their funeral. Dr Ang has written a letter to SCWO to express her apologies for not being able to make it for the Friday's event and the difficulties that she face.     "My Dear Friends of the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations, :     I am writing to you with great disappointment that I am unable to join you all on the 18 March 2016 for the wonderful celebration. It is not of my own choice, so I ask your forgiveness for letting you down.     Since you first told me of the wonderful news of your decision to include me in the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame, I have emailed the relevant authorities requesting a Singapore Travel Document, as far back as November 2015. I was so thrilled at the prospect of being able to come to the event and meeting  everyone, family and friends, and to thank you all personally. I now received news that I will not get a Singapore Travel Document. It can only be granted upon my producing proof that I have renounced British Citizenship. The last Singapore Travel Document granted in 2012 when I brought my husband’s ashes home was a one off and not to be repeated.     There is not enough time to do this as I must secure British Residency before surrendering British Citizenship. My right of abode and right to work as a surgeon in the UK is conditional on British Citizenship and once that is gone my entire status in the UK is going to be illegal and I stand to be deported. The sensible thing to do is to apply for British Residency before renouncing British Citizenship and truly at this late hour there is not enough time to do this. Application for British Residency takes five years. In other words I would not be able to enter Singapore for another five years!     I have been going round in circles wondering what I should do since I learnt of this. The realisation of a further five years of not being able to come home seems so much more distressing than the last 39 years living in exile. The last 39 years saw my being refused the opportunity to see my parents and my mother-in-law when they were dying, and of course I could not attend their funerals as well.     By God’s grace, as I woke up to Mothering Sunday this morning and started to pray for all mothers, including foster mothers who protect orphans,  I gathered enough composure and strength to write to you now.  I really should not be feeling sorry for myself but be thankful that your invitation to this great honour has prompted me to write to the Singapore authorities and research the complicated mechanics of how to come home.     I recall when I was having enormous difficulties fighting the White Male British Surgical Hierarchy as a junior woman surgeon in the UK, I have clung on to the wise saying “Never ask for the way to be easy, but only that it is possible and the strength to follow it”.  I am much older now, but what gave me hope and courage decades ago has now come back to strengthen me again.     When 18 March comes, I will be praying for all of you that everything will go as planned and it will be a wonderful and inspiring evening, that your hard work and efforts will be greatly rewarded.     With very best wishes and God bless     Dr Ang Swee Chai" *Francis Khoo was a human rights lawyer. Together with G Raman, Francis also defended two marine workers who were charged with Tan Wah Piow for rioting in the early 1970s. Arranging a massacre of civilians is appalling. As Ariel Sharon was later elected as Prime Minister of Israel, his actions and character, or personal qualities, must be highly regarded in a leader by the Israelis. Looks like the Israelis have a sick sense of humour in naming their operations:  Operation Peace for Galilee, in this case.  I'm not sure if this is intended or not. Wonder if Hillary Clinton would consider Ariel Sharon's massacres 'deplorable' ... in which case, Ariel Sharon would definitely have himself a basket of deplorable massacres. BUTCHER OF LIBYA HILLARY CLINTON ON BUTCHER OF BEIRUT Slobodan Milosevic was vilified and referred to by the Western press as the "Butcher of Bosnia".  That's Slobodan Milosevic that was murdered by capitalist agents in a cell in Brussels, who was recently exonerated by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Doubt that Ariel Sharon was called the "Butcher of the Middle East" by the same capitalist-controlled press ... although it sounds like he might have deserved the title, judging by Dr Chai's article. Israelis also broke the ceasefire. The impression I have is that the Israeli government is not not to be trusted in war, spying, guerilla warfare, nuclear armament and maybe other things I've yet to discover. PS  ...  I just looked up 'Butcher of the Middle East' and I found:  Butcher of Beirut (Sharon). NOTE I don't do this subject justice, as I don't know enough to really comment intelligently ... and I've wound up hijacking the topic with side material (Serbia versus US Capitalist Empire, years later), which I find an interesting comparison of capitalist-controlled US foreign policy. In Lebanon, potentially 30,000 people were massacred and it wasn't like it was an impersonal bombing or a quick shot to the head, or something like that.  The level of extreme violence and cruelty is incomprehensible:  I don't understand anyone wanting to kill in this way, although I can understand that people do kill.  I always imagine a 'civilised' killing, whatever that is.  Maybe I've watched too many movies, before I stopped watching them. The massacre in Lebanon involved extreme and up-close and personal violence against everyone, including including women and children; and it involved rapes and other atrocities, going by my quick perusal of an article I intend to go back to.
