While the US has conducted more than 2,500 airstrikes against ISIS in Syria over the past year to very little effect, Power has taken to warning Russia that its claimed "military deployment" to Syria is "not a winning strategy." One can only imagine the guffaws in Moscow over the architect of the US interventionist fiascos in Libya and Syria advising anyone on how to craft a winning foreign policy strategy. But Power, evidently utterly incapable of seeing the world as those of us in the reality-based community see it, takes to revising history to provide "evidence" for her Russia advice.  [... lol] Power repeats on CNN today the old discredited claim that Assad "gassed his own people" back in 2013 -- a claim so flimsy that Obama was forced to back down on his promise to begin bombing the country in retaliation. In other words, in the below statement to CNN today, the US Ambassador to the UN lied and she knew she was lying when she warned Russia that:     Doubling down on a regime that gases its people, that barrel bombs its people, that tortures people who it arrests simply for protesting and for claiming their rights -- that's just not going to work. Meanwhile, Power downplays the threat of ISIS vis Assad, suggesting that it is "Machiavellian" to get too worked up over the possibility of an ISIS victory in Syria:     Even if you were Machiavelli and all you cared about was ISIL, to support a regime like this and to not take account of the views of the vast majority of the Syrian people that want to go in a different direction is not going to either bring peace or actually succeed in defeating terrorism, which is what President Putin says his priority is. Of course Power has no way of knowing what the majority in Syria prefer. But we do know that when asked, they clearly prefer Assad over ISIS. So she lied again. While the US and its allies -- Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the other Gulf States -- have openly trained, funded, and equipped radical jihadists to further their policy of regime change in Syria, Power displays again her astonishing chutzpah by blaming the ensuing rise of terrorism on...Russia and Iran!     Russia and Iran may be the place really where one should lodge much of that criticism for supporting a regime that is carrying out these monstrous attacks against civilians, and again fueling -- whether wittingly or unwittingly -- the rise of terrorism. But the "humanitarian" Power, is "just focused on what is going to make things better in the here and now" in Syria. To her this apparently includes damning Russia for its opposition to al-Qaeda and ISIS in Syria and continuing to promote these same groups. Power's chutzpah does not stop there -- indeed it seemingly knows no bounds. While US intervention and regime change policy has directly led to the massive exodus from the country and resulting refugee crisis in Europe, the US diplomat pins the blame on...not enough US interventionism!     You can't look at 12 million people being displaced from their homes, and desperate families washing up on shores and be satisfied with where we are. I think the challenge is to find what is the policy tool that's going to make things better. Here's a suggestion: leave Syria alone! [Source:  http://www.chomsky.info/letters/19900301.htm] COMMENT Although I knew there was NSA and FVEY mass surveillance, I must have missed the bit where the NSA conducts surveillance on entire populations of FOREIGN (non-FVEY) nations, as I was of the impression that surveillance was kept it 'in the family'.  Wrong. Surveillance extends to the USA spying on the Bahamas, Mexico, Kenya, Philippines and another country (likely violent if named).  But the odds are it's not limited to these countries. Why on earth would they be conducting surveillance on the population of Kenya?  Which country is the mysterious 'unnamed' country? No idea about the interest in Kenya, but I'm going to go with Pakistan for the unnamed country. Anyway, the enormity of this revelation totally blew me away.   The populations of entire nations are subject to US surveillance and are not only deprived of privacy, but are also, therefore, deprived of liberty. So how is it that this is swept under a rug and that nobody's concerned about a deed that, in my view, amounts to worldwide criminal activity by a major government? Take into consideration the 'Operation Gladio' and US 'Gladio B' activities, and the US government attempts to suppress that information.   Find the information difficult to absorb and might need to revisit the topic some time.  Nonetheless, here we have yet another example of  the US engaged in what amounts to criminal activity.  Judging by earlier disclosures (eg Gary Webb), the US has a long history of involvements in criminal activity, exposure, persecution of whistle-blowers and suppression of press and whistle-blower disclosures. Yet we have Australia's attorney-general, George Brandis, addressing a US 'echo chamber' 'think tank' (Centre for Strategic & International Studies) earlier in the year, pronouncing a whistle-blower, Snowden, a 'traitor', according to the screaming SMH headline. Brandis is the same guy who is aggressively ducking Senator Ludlam's questions in a parliamentary committee (video above), doing democracy a disservice in more ways than one, in my view. Meanwhile, in Europe, we have a stripped Russian oligarch speaking about the holy grail of 'democracy' to be installed in Russia by Europe and USA, broadcast from some US agenda NGO platform, before a rapt audience of Cuban dissidents and assorted other US ass-kissers. I don't have the mental skills, the language skills or the patience to sit here trying to find the words to articulate just how perverse I find all of the above. As I see it, you have a criminal, or rogue, gargantuan, super-government seeking to control the rest of the world by whatever means and without any limits; you have those within its trade and military treaty sphere (which is enormous), not only standing by without question, but also aggressively smearing those that stand up and disclose wrongdoing; there's a long a pattern of those beyond control or influence (or dissidents) and members of the press that dare reveal the truth, being vilified, hunted down, harassed and shut down; there's a corrupt or fearful press, that is either part of the established order, or else otherwise controlled, by authorities; there's a topsy-turvy world where 'good' is 'bad' and 'bad' is 'good'; a thousand sly GO and NGO platforms from which to evangelise about the holy grail of 'democracy', had by none but to be exported to all;  there's the abuse of power and totalitarianism (that's hypocritically decried elsewhere), and this abuse is pervasive and entrenched. Somewhere along the line, there's also denial of the important role whistle-blowers play -- or are supposed to play -- in keeping the crooked straight. And Australian whilstle-blower publisher, Julian Assange, is still held without charge by the Sweden-UK-US trio blocking his political asylum to Ecuador, while his nation stands by unconcerned about this injustice. NZ >>> Dirty Politics: Police raid Nicky Hager's home Updated 16 min ago 4:28 PM Monday Oct 6, 2014 Dirty Politics author Nicky Hager has had his home raided by police searching for the hacker Rawshark. In a 10-hour search of his house, Hager said computers and papers were seized in what appeared to be an attempt to discover the identity of the person who provided information used in the Dirty Politics book. The book was an election bombshell based on hacked email and social media material belonging to WhaleOil blogger Cameron Slater. The person contacted the Herald and Fairfax using the identity Rawshark while using the Twitter handle @whaledump to release information publicly. Hager said five officers came to his Wellington home last Thursday with a search warrant. He was in Auckland at the time the police arrived giving lectures at the University of Auckland. "Soon after the police arrived, the lead detective stated that I was not a suspect in their case, merely a witness." Hager said he told the detective there was nothing in his house which held information that would uncover the source. "Nonetheless, he and his four colleagues seized a large collection of papers and electronic equipment belonging to my family, including computers, drives, phones, CDs, an IPOD and a camera." [Intimation and harassment?] Hager said the search and seizure of the material was a "fishing expedition" carried out by officers who had no idea who they were looking for, hoping for a lucky break. "I am confident that the police took nothing that will help them with their investigation." Hager said he would not cooperate with police in any way to reveal the Dirty Politics source - or any other source. "I believe the police actions are dangerous for journalism in New Zealand. "It matters to all people working in the media who could similarly have their property searched and seized to look for sources. People are less likely to help the media if the police act in this way. "The police want people to respect their role in society; they should in turn respect other people's roles in society." He said he was speaking to his lawyers about challenging the police action. In this case a newly elected Key government that waited until after the election to throw its weight around.  Gee, I wonder why. The press is under attack in the US (where the WH is clamping down on providing information & harassing journalists), in the UK where journalists are spied on by police abusing anti-terror powers, under attack in Australia with the new 'anti-terror' gagging laws ... and under attack in NZ, as above!!! It seems huge to me.  But I'm new to watching this stuff, so maybe this is an ongoing battle?  Or maybe not.  New laws; new mass surveillance; surveillance (Five Eye) in concert; world wide police state?
