Barack Obama admits: The CIA 'tortured some folks after 9/11' Friday 01 August 2014 “We tortured some folks,” he admitted, “We did some things that were contrary to our values.” In 2009 he described waterboarding, a favourite CIA technique, as torture and “a mistake” and he banned its use by American operatives, but last night’s comments are the most emphatic admission.. President Obama, speaking ahead of the expected release of a Senate report that criticises the CIA’s treatment of captives, steered clear of commenting on the efficacy of torture. He added that he believed the mistreatment occurred because of pressure security officials felt to prevent another attack. He said Americans should not be too “sanctimonious,” about passing judgment through the lens of a seemingly safer present. He also expressed confidence in his CIA director, John Brennan, in the wake of an internal CIA report documenting that the spy agency improperly accessed Senate computers. There have been calls for his resignation by congressional lawmakers. Missiles launched in Mediterranean towards Syrian coast, claims Russian defence ministry Russia has claimed that its missile early warning system has detected the launch of two missiles from the central part of the Mediterranean Sea fired towards the Sea's eastern coastline. 10:29AM BST 03 Sep 2013 The launches took place at 10:16 am Moscow time (0616 GMT) and were detected by the ballistic missile early warning system in Armavir in southern Russia, the defence ministry said in a statement quoted by Russian news agencies. Shortly after 11am, Israel announced that it had carried out a joint missile test with the US in the Mediterranean, using a missile designed to shoot down incoming missiles. Russia's state-owned RIA Novosti news agency said both missiles then crashed into the sea, citing a source in Damascus. The Russian embassy in Syria said there was no sign of a missile attack or of explosions in Damascus. The Ministry of Defence in London confirmed that the missiles were not British. ... Russia had earlier criticised the United States on Tuesday for sending warships close to Syria, saying the deployments would exacerbate tension as Washington prepares for a possible military strike. "The pressure being applied by the United States causes particular concern," Russian Defence Ministry official Oleg Dogayev was quoted as saying by the state-run Itar-Tass news agency. He said "the dispatch of ships armed with cruise missiles toward Syria's shores has a negative effect on the situation in the region." Ukrainian Army’s Shelling Interrupts TV, Radio Broadcast in Donetsk 08:15 03/08/2014 DONETSK, August 3 (RIA Novosti) - Television broadcast was interrupted in eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk due to Ukrainian army’s artillery shelling of the city, a representative from Donetsk People’s Republic’s television and radio committee told RIA Novosti. “Ukrainian aviation carried out an artillery assault against the power station in Mandrykyne [southern suburb of Donetsk.] The power station was severely damaged, another 220 stations went down shortly after. One of them powered TV aerial in the Petrovsky district of Donetsk. As a result, TV broadcast stopped in Donetsk, as well as the broadcast of 70 percent of radio stations,” the committee’s representative told RIA Novosti. On Saturday, at least three people were killed in artillery shelling in the Petrovsky district of Donetsk. The shells hit a school and a local power station. According to the committee’s representative, “this was obviously not a random shelling, but there is a targeted destruction of key positions, as it was previously done in Luhansk.” The committee’s representative added that they foresaw such development of the events and arranged two reserve radio transmitting stations. In mid-July, Donetsk authorities ordered to halt the broadcast of Ukrainian TV channels replacing them with Russian ones. At the moment, Radio Republic, official radio station of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, is broadcasting in the region. While TV broadcast is unavailable, but the repair work is underway. Ukraine’s government troops have used ballistic missiles against independence supporters in the country’s east. CNN reported citing US officials earlier this week that Ukraine’s government troops used short-range ballistic missiles in the east. Sneaky EU - Double Standards - Lifting Ukraine Arms Ban

Relations between Moscow and Brussels have deteriorated since the EU imposed sanctions on Russia over its involvement in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists are fighting government forces. In its heaviest penalties on Moscow yet, the EU passed a new round of sanctions on Russia's defence, energy and financial sectors this week. "During a recent meeting of the Council of Europe in Brussels, leaders of EU member states agreed 'on the quiet' to remove restrictions on exports to Kiev of equipment that could be used for internal repression," the ministry said in a statement on its website. "Exports of military technologies and equipment were also allowed," the statement said, without saying when the decision was taken by the EU. It said the restrictions had been put in place in February, the month that Viktor Yanukovich was ousted as Ukraine's president. Removing such restrictions showed double standards, it said, and called on EU leaders not to be "goaded" by Washington over events in eastern Ukraine.
