Today's Travels

Today's Travels

Not a lot happens in Moldova ... I think.

Some money laundering with someone from the Russian Federation that involved a NZ company.  Massive amount of money.

But not as impressive as the amount of money the Mexican drug cartels turn over.  Recent bust.  LA garment district, I think it was.  H.U.G.E. money.  Something like $70 million in cash alone.

Azerbaijan and an autonomous republic seem to be buddies and the Pres of Az is related by marriage to the 'lord' of the landlocked district (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic) -- Vasif Talibov.

Had to look that up.  Trouble remembering:  Nakchivan Nakhchivan.

Vasif Talibov is "said to run the region as his "personal fiefdom" and he:

"supported Heydar Aliyev after his return from Moscow to Nakhchivan to seize power and participated in the establishment of the New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) founded by Haydar Aliyev."

Just spotted a very strange link between Nakhchivan and a region in Austria - Styria (Steiermark).  'Cleantech' is the big money spinner in the region, which relates to recycling, renewable energy, grey water, information technology (odd man out?) etc.

Security forces said to use "excessive force against opponents of the ruling regime" and Talibov seen as member of ruling oligarchy "centred around the Aliyev family".

Ilham Aliyev, Az Pres is son of a former president of Azerbaijan (Heydar Aliyev, born Nakhchivan, & "ousted from Politburo by Gorbachev"), his government is described as 'autocratic' and is said to be corrupt.

US / Amnesty International allegations:
  • election 'irregularities'
  • crackdowns against journalists and opposition activists
  • jailing of election monitors

    In 2009 Aliyev:

"passed a referendum which removed the presidential consecutive term limit, thereby allowing him to run for president as many times as he wishes."

There's also a standing provision (couldn't be bothered checking again) that the president is immune from being sued or something like that.

Ilham Aliyev is described by Daily Mail as a "billionaire dictator" and a "despot" and the country is described as an "oil rich state".

In 2011 Prince Anderew stood down as UK trade envoy because of his relationship with Aliyev, who is accused of.

'...routine use of excessive and brutal force by police, restrictions on public protest, and the censorship imposed on bloggers and journalists who are beaten and imprisoned for criticising the government.’

Some other DM article indicates massive oil wealth and a population of fewer than 10 million.

Tried to find the 'missing princess' but I couldn't find her, so she must belong to some other country.

Did come across a photo of protester being savagely beaten, so maybe it's no bull about the human rights violations.

Too tired to look any more.  It's just a snippet of Azerbaijan which will hopefully come in handy next time I read something associated.

    ...........................................................................
    PS
I've had to keep editing the reference to the autonomous republic because I'm confusing it with some other  'defacto republic' that the Armenians and Azerbaijanis fought over and have mixed up the details.

Pain trying to keep them straight. This one's landlocked. The other one isn't.  The other region is a 'mountainous' and borders Armenia -- it's Nagorno-Karabakh.
Initially thought it also bordered Iran & Turkey, but on second (quickie) look, I don't think it does. I'm on the verge of collapse, so I'm not confirming. LOL

Sweden - Parliamentary Election on Sunday

After 8 years of tax cuts and pro-market reforms, Sweden's left projected to make comeback

    By KARL RITTER Associated Press
    First Posted: September 12, 2014 - 2:39 am

STOCKHOLM — Gone are the days when Sweden was the undisputed world champion of high taxes.

"We are not even top three anymore," boasts Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, reflecting on the tax cuts that have defined his eight-year rule — the longest ever for a conservative leader in Sweden.

Polls before a parliamentary election on Sunday show voters could shift back to the left amid worries that Reinfeldt's smaller-government policies have undermined Sweden's famed welfare model.

Many Swedes say they no longer recognize the country once considered the quintessential welfare state — an almost classless society where high taxes supported a generous social safety net.

Instead, Sweden now has become an inspiring example to conservative leaders like British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is a friend of Reinfeldt.

"They have sold out our country," said Jens Evaldsson, a 39-year-old Stockholm artist with a fluffy beard and a firm dislike of Reinfeldt's government. "The rich are getting richer and things are getting worse for the poor."

The pro-market reforms didn't start with Reinfeldt, 49, but have accelerated during his two terms in office.

Since it took power in 2006, his center-right coalition government has cut income and corporate taxes, abolished a tax on wealth, trimmed welfare benefits, eased labor laws and privatized state-owned companies, including the maker of Absolut vodka.

Meanwhile, the gap between rich and poor has grown faster in Sweden than in most developed countries, though it remains among the world's most egalitarian, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Sweden's tax-to-gross domestic product ratio is now the fifth highest in the developed world at 44 percent, down from 48 percent (second-highest after Denmark) when Reinfeldt took office, according to the OECD.

Swedes continue to enjoy free education, heavily subsidized health care and generous welfare benefits, including 16 months of paid parental leave.

But the government's influence on people's lives has decreased significantly. More private actors run publicly funded schools and hospitals. The government still controls liquor stores, but has ended its monopoly on pharmacies.

"All the kinds of choices that I was not given when I was young, or my parents, are now there," Reinfeldt told a small group of reporters last week at the government headquarters in Stockholm. "You can now choose your kindergarten, your school, your health care, your elderly care."

The problem for Reinfeldt is a lot of Swedes don't seem to like all that choice.

Even though his government has won praise internationally for keeping Sweden's economy intact during Europe's financial turmoil, at home the perception has taken root that he's selling out the welfare system to greedy capitalists.

Negative headlines have dominated the Swedish media: privately run schools shutting down because of mismanagement by profit-hungry owners; elderly homes cutting back on adult diapers to minimize costs.

Reinfeldt's government is struggling to change that narrative, and polls show his four-party coalition trailing the Social Democrat-led opposition bloc by 5-10 percentage points.

Social Democrat leader and prime minister-candidate Stefan Lofven blames the government also for the declining performance of Swedish schools in international surveys and for failing to reduce the unemployment rate, which has remained steady at 8 percent in recent years.

"A lot of people are wondering what's going on in Sweden," Lofven told The Associated Press after a debate Wednesday. "What's at stake in this election is whether we should continue to cut taxes and privatize, and think that's the solution to Sweden's problems."

Though his answer is "no," he's not ready to roll back some of the government's most popular reforms, including tax cuts for middle-income earners. Lofven, 57, says he would raise income taxes only for people earning more than 720,000 kronor ($100,000) a year.

Even if the opposition wins the election, the result is likely to be among the worst ever for the Social Democrats, who once got up to 50 percent of the votes. Now they have around 30 percent and depend on the backing of the environmentalist Greens and the ex-communist Left Party.

Another game-changer is that Sweden no longer bucks the European trend of far-right parties gaining ground. Polls show the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, who entered Parliament in 2010, could nearly double their support to 10 percent.

A once-radical far-right group that has softened its image, the party is alone in opposing Sweden's generous welcome to refugees from Syria, Iraq and other conflict zones. This year, Sweden expects up to 80,000 asylum-seekers, the highest number since 1992.

Both blocs shun the party and are expected to reach a compromise in case neither side wins a majority, to avoid giving the Sweden Democrats the balance of power.

In a campaign speech, Reinfeldt urged Swedes to "open your hearts" and accept that the increasing cost of admitting refugees, who are offered free housing and a small daily allowance, will restrict the budget for the next government.

"What's unusual with Sweden is that even a conservative leader like Reinfeldt speaks in glowing terms about a generous refugee policy," said Ulf Bjereld, a political science professor at the University of Gothenburg. "Even if it's going to cost a lot of money."

Sweden - Election - Unemployment & other analysis

Young voter push as election hovers

    Published: 12 Sep 2014 08:17 GMT+02:00

Sweden's election is now just two days away and the main parties are pushing to attract young and undecided voters.

One in three voters have not yet chosen who to vote for, according to a poll for Sveriges Radio on Thursday.

Among young people that figure rises to almost two in three.

The figures follow a campaign during which youth unemployment has been a hot topic.

    Sweden elections: who's who?

The Swedish economy and its AAA credit rating might be envied by most European countries, but unemployment among people aged 15 to 24 has been oscillating between 20 and 25 percent over the past years -- about three times higher than overall joblessness.

Sweden's general election campaign has even spilled over into Norway as political rivals pursue votes among the tens of thousands of mostly young Swedes emigrating to find work.

Close to full employment, Norway is seeking foreign workers to meet labour shortages, and many Swedish waiters, nurses, dentists, engineers are crossing the border.

Jimmie Åkesson, leader of the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, has been campaigning in Oslo. He argues that the reason so many Swedes have to emigrate is that foreigners are taking their jobs back home.

"When Sweden grants twice as many residence permits as it creates jobs, that's what you get," he told news agency AFP.

However, Malin Sahlén, an economist who has written a book on the issue, believes that the reasons for the high unemployment are different.

She argues that low-qualification jobs are rare in Sweden's economy and that high protection of employees on permanent contracts make employers resort to hiring temporary workers, which tends to create frequent gaps of unemployment when those workers change position.

"According to Eurostat, 14 percent of the jobs in Europe are low-paid, and that figure is only 3 percent in Sweden," she said.

Meanwhile Thursday's party leader debate on TV4 ended in a brawl over nuclear power. In the final stages of the discussion, the Alliance party leaders pushed Social Democrat leader Stefan Löfven on how he intends to tackle the issue.

Centre Party leader Annie Lööf provoked a strong reaction in the debate.

Watch a clip of the leadership debate here

Löfven has previously spoken out in favour of retaining Sweden's nuclear power stations, but during the debate he would only speak broadly about offering a "future analysis" of the country's energy demands and the need for a Red-Green bloc agreement on he issue.

Centre Party leader Annie Lööf asked him to be more specific, producing a copy of a report by the Swedish Energy Agency and taking it over to him. He held his hand up in protest and appeared as if he was trying to push her away.

"This is just bickering. You can keep it there," said Löfven.

Carin Jämtin, party secretary for the opposition Social Democrats told Sveriges Radio there were still a lot of votes to play for: "The last part of the election campaign is very important. We will knock on doors, take part in debates and talk with voters in other ways right up to the end of polling day," she told Sveriges Radio.

Per Nilsson, head of analysis for the ruling conservative Moderates says his party will also do what it can to attract the undecided voters: "It's not about targeting a specific part of the electorate with surgical precision", he told Swedish Radio, adding "we're going out with a broad message about how we want to make Sweden better together with our colleagues in the Alliance."

Elections take place on Sunday with a major exit poll expected soon after voting closes at 20:00.

    Good piece to set aside.

Gives an idea of the climate.

    Poland's Radek Sikorski - Crimea & Ukraine

Sikorski: If Poland is hawkish on Ukraine, is Russia a dove?

    Published: 12/09/2014 - 08:34 | Updated: 12/09/2014 - 09:11

SPECIAL REPORT: If the EU had reacted more strongly to Russia's annexation of Crimea and adopted sanction more quickly, as Poland advocated, the currrent conflict in Donetsk, Ukraine, would not have happened, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told EurActiv in an exclusive interview.

At the age 18, Radosław (Radek) Sikorski chaired the student strike committee in Bydgoszcz in 1981. In June 1981 he travelled to the UK to study English. After martial law was declared in Poland in December 1981, he was granted political asylum in Britain. He studied at Oxford. In the mid-1980s, he worked as a freelance journalist for publications such as The Spectator and The Observer. He returned to Poland in August 1989 and since 2007 has served as deputy minister of defence, deputy minister of foreign affairs, minister of defence and foreign minister in Donald Tusk’s cabinet.

He spoke to EurActiv’s Georgi Gotev and EurActiv Poland’s Krzysztof Kokoszczyński.

Poland is one of the counties shaping EU foreign policy during the Ukrainian crisis. How can that influence be maintained and expanded into other areas of common policy?

When we called for a united European energy policy or solidarity in response to Russian trade barriers we were often called “Russia-phobes”. Now, after president Putin broke a whole series of international agreements, Europe is starting to understand the value of solidarity and standing together. Not only against Russia. Better coordination among European countries translates into better security and economic position in the long run for all of us.  [comment 2016:  Oh, yeah.  Is that why Europe has been invaded by over 1 million Arabs and Africans (conservative estimates), while the European Union has stood by and watched with 'Welcome' signs .... ?   Is that why Europe is meddling in the Middle East?  Is Europe destroying countries to steal resources?  LOL ]

But our analysis and ideas have been valuable and not only in case of Ukraine. Since it joined the EU, Poland has been actively shaping the European Union’s internal and external policy. We undertook several initiatives aimed at strengthening the EU Common European Security and Defence Policy and the Eastern European neighbourhood. Most recently, Poland, together with Sweden and the UK, was among those EU countries that initiated and drove the establishment of the European Union Advisory Mission to Security Sector Reform in Ukraine[Comment 2016:  these would be the evil governments then: Britain, Sweden & Poland - No doubt anti-Russian, pro-neocon and keen on intrigue and military actions.]

The conflict in Ukraine has reinvigorated NATO, to a certain extent at least. In this new security environment do you foresee any developments in EU security policy or would that area of policy take now a definite back seat to arrangements through NATO?

The Ukraine-Russia conflict has reinvigorated both NATO and the EU. Obviously there are areas one of the latter is more competent than the other. Mutual compatibility between their actions must be assured.  [comment 2016:  What?  Are you kidding?  All the EU did was punish European farmers with sanctions?  Tip out another load of rotten tomatoes in high street, Europe.  ]

How would you respond to those in the EU who criticise Poland's position on Ukraine as too hawkish?

If Poland is a “hawk”, than how are we to describe Russia? A “dove” of peace? As a neighbour of Russia, we wanted to be a partner with her as much as it is possible. We managed to establish cross-border movement with the Kaliningrad Region. Tens of thousands of Russian citizens may visit Poland without any bureaucratic formalities and trade started to flourish.  [comment 2016:  Russia might do better to partner with a snake than partner with Poland's politicians. ]

However, when Russia decided to take over Crimea and to directly engage militarily in the territory of its neighbour, we had to clearly communicate to Moscow that it has to stop.   [comment  2016:  Crimea voted to return to the bosom of Mother RussiaReturn Kosovo to Serbia, you EU creeps.  ]

Possibly, if the EU's reaction to the Crimea annexation had been vigorous enough and we had pushed forward for more decisive, immediate sanctions, then [the conflict in] Donetsk would not have happened.

Poland aspires to become a regional leader in Central and Eastern Europe. What, in your view as foreign minister, is the current role of Poland in the region? It seems Poland is not – at least not yet – able to truly coordinate policy with the Baltic and other post-communist countries? Most of the time, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, for example, cannot be seen as “followers” of Polish policy...?

Countries freely shape their policies – in line with democratic procedures, international commitments and according to their interests. The efforts of our four countries, all with similar backgrounds in terms of recent history, have made possible the creation of the Visegrad Group. It turned out to be an effective and flexible instrument of developing policies in the region. This does not mean however that we must always be unanimous and speak in one voice. Differences in the perception of interests which are at stake, specific circumstances, as well as traditions and the potential of the individual countries come into play.  [comment 2016:  Visegrad Group sounds like bad news.  Run.  ]

Are you optimistic that the EU is warming up to the idea of putting in place a more coherent energy policy? How would you describe the Polish role in this endeavor?

Recent developments in the East proved that EU needs to urgently push forward some of the key aspects of the energy agenda. The main challenge shall be to continue a consequent market integration based on common rules enshrined in the third energy package. Europe needs a well interconnected network of energy infrastructure and more efficient security of supply mechanisms. No member state shall be left alone in case of supply disruptions.

Poland has always been a major proponent of the creation of the Energy Union which Prime Minister Tusk has called for on several occasions. We have the know-how about how the things work in the East and we know the major issues that restrict the development of the internal market in our region.

Poland is one of the larger member states of the EU but she also enjoys warm relations with the US. The relations between Brussels and Washington can be sometimes tense – as was the case with PRISM and wiretapping of the senior politicians in the EU. How can Poland balance its relationship with the US with its responsibilities as a member state of the EU? And what can Poland do to defuse tensions between both sides of the Atlantic? And what about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)?  [comment 2016:  LOL ... Yes, we know what kind of 'warm relations' Poland shares with the US, thanks to the leaked Radek tape.  ]

Transatlantic cooperation and close ties between Europe and the US are the foundation of our common prosperity and security. We have to work on it regardless of some tensions which are unavoidable when we face so many complex challenges. Our good relations with US are an asset. There is no doubt Poland will be championing a “team spirit” among both the EU and US[comment 2016:  this guy sounds like a shill for US-Anglo capitalism.]

Polish foreign policy is based on the principles and values we share on both sides of Atlantic. In the present security situation, we understand much better that the transatlantic community requires our engagement in any sphere – security, economy, democracy building. In this regard the TTIP may be a significant factor of Europe’s energy independence[comment 2016:  another creepy capitalist serving politician.]

What does Donald Tusk’s appointment mean for Poland?

The decision of EU leaders to elect Prime Minister Tusk to become next European Council President is a great achievement. It is undoubtedly the prime minister’s personal success but equally a success of Poland. We take this decision as both a signal of appreciation of the policies Poland has pursued over ten years of its EU membership and a sign that the distinctions between “old” and “new” member states are rapidly crumbling. On the 10th anniversary of Poland’s accession to the EU, a Pole will lead the institution which sets the priorities of Europe.  [comment:  Poland has been shilling for US-Anglo capitalism for a decade & this is its reward for being a lapdog.  Not much of an achievement, really, is it?  LOL  ]

Noticed this has just had a bit of attention.

This is from ages ago when I didn't know what was really going on.

Israel - 43 reservists refuse to serve, protest 'abuse'

43 reservists refuse to serve, protest 'abuse'

Soldiers from the elite Unit 8200 say they don't want to serve in a system that 'harms the rights of millions'

Dozens of reserve officers in Unit 8200 — the unit of Israel’s Military Intelligence agency (Aman) that specializes in intercepting communications — have declared in a letter published Friday they refuse to continue and serve because of the way the army uses some of the information they obtain during their routine duties.

A joint letter from 43 mid-rank officers and sergeants (including one Major) stated that they would not carry out their assigned duties anymore because some of the information Unit 8200 harvests, largely by listening in on Palestinians' phone calls, has to do with those Palestinians' health or their sexual orientation.

Moreover, the officers said, these personal pieces of intelligence are then handed over to the Shin Bet (Israel's domestic security services).

In the letter, circulated to Hebrew-language media, the officers also complained that information gleaned from Unit 8200 signals intelligence (sigint) is used for the execution of targeted assassinations and intrusive surveillance of civilians, saying innocent Palestinians have been killed in those strikes.

"We no longer want to continue to serve in this system, which harms the rights of millions of people. We call all soldiers serving in the unit or who are going to serve, and all Israeli citizens to make their voices heard against these abuses and work to put a stop to it," the letter said.

The letter was addressed to the Director of Military Intelligence Major General Aviv Kochavi, Minister of Defense Moshe Ya'alon and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Unit 8200 — formally known to its English-language foreign partners as ISNU (Israeli Sigint National Unit) — is equivalent to America’s NSA (the National Security Agency) and Britain’s GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters).

Brigadier General Hanan Gefen, former commander of the unit, said: "If I was the unit's commander I would have terminated their [protesters] service, court-marshalled them, and ask for severe punishment. They used confidential information, which they privy to during their service, to promote their political agenda."

The Israeli army issued a statement saying, "Unit 8200 has been working since its establishment on gathering intelligence that enables the army and the security services to fulfill their missions and helps defending Israel's citizens on a daily basis."

    This is huge.

It got coverage in The Guardian and the Israel government denied the allegations regarding bystanders.

Didn't check if it had coverage elsewhere.
