Top 10 Well Known Hacking Groups Of All Time

By Kavita Iyer on September 16, 2015 Technology

World’s 10 most famous hacking groups who have had most success in recent times

Like the animals, hackers also hack their prey in groups. Sometimes these groups become famous for perceived good deeds like hacking ISIS websites done by Anonymous but most of the time these hacker groups operate against the law. Some of the hacker groups have since disbanded after being in public eye. The prime example of infamous hackers group is Lizard Squad. They DDoSed the PlayStation and Xbox servers right during the time of Christmas weekend earning them many villains.

Today we are listing top such 10 most notorious hackers of all time.

1. Lizard Squad

The DDoS attack on Facebook that lowered the popular social media network as well the cyber attacks on Malaysia Airlines website that directed visitors to a page which read “404 – plane not found,” were carried out by the Lizard Squad. While Facebook refused to accept being hacked, Malaysia Airlines stated that their domain had been temporarily redirected elsewhere and that they had not been hacked. Lizard Squad has also hacked Microsoft and Sony[404-Plane Not Found .... lol]

The intentions of Lizard Squad look dark and gloomy due to the diverse history of their work. They are not totally computer hackers as most of the hack they do is comedy. The group is responsible for a high-profile hack of Microsoft Xbox Live and Sony’s Playstation Network. In August 2014, the group posted the ISIS flag on Sony’s servers and made other indirect references to the “cyber caliphate.” The group was arrested by the authorities in the U.S. and England after the Xbox and Playstation hacks.  [lol Cyber Caliphate]

2. Syrian Electronic Army

The Syrian Electronic Army claims to target political opposition groups and claims to support the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It calls itself “a group of enthusiastic Syrian youths who could not stay passive towards the massive distortion of facts about the recent uprising in Syria”.

It becomes involved in the use of malware, phishing, defacement, spamming, and denial of service (DDoS) attacks with often posting the Syrian flag on a victim’s website. Some have even assumed as a fact that the group is connected with the Syrian state. The group have targeted the Facebook pages and Twitter accounts of President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, as well as technology companies and news organizations. Their tone is “serious and political to ironic and humorous.”

3. LulzSec

After the HBGary Federal hack of 2011, LulzSec – Lulz Security abbreviated – formed as an Anonymous spinoff. It’s slogan was “Laughing at your security since 2011.” The group announced itself with a hack against Fox.com, then Sony Pictures in 2011. The group took the CIA website offline[lol ... I'm impressed]

LulzSec had become well known for ridiculing its victims after an attack, which made the analysts compare them to the hacks to internet pranks. In June 2011, a ‘50 days of Lulz’ statement announced that the group had fallen out. However, on July 18, the News Corporation was hacked by the group, who had posted false news about the death of Rupert Murdoch.

In 2012, the LulzSec members were arrested by the FBI after the group’s leader, Sabu, turned them in. Prosecutor Sandip Patel said the group thought of themselves as “latter-day pirates.”

4. Anonymous

“We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forgive…. Expect us.”

Known most for its hacking and Guy Fawkes masks, Anonymous is a decentralized open online creation group. Reports conceive that Anonymous is made up of thousands of “hacktivists.” The group has compromised religious, corporate and government websites.

The group has declared war on Scientology and hacked the Pentagon. In 2012’s Operation Payback, they also attacked MasterCard, Visa and PayPal for refusing to process payments to WikiLeaks, which in turn led WikiLeaks to choose the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Anonymous supported Occupy Wall Street and hacked the New York Stock Exchange website in 2011.

For being involved in Anonymous, individuals have been arrested in the U.S., UK, Netherlands, Australia, Spain, and Turkey.
5. The Level Seven Crew

Rumored to be encouraged by the seventh level of hell from Dante’s Inferno, ‘the violent’ level, this hacking group hacked 60 high profile computer systems (NASA, The First American National Bank, Sheraton Hotels) in 1999. They also hacked into the US Embassy in China’s website. However, this group broke up and stopped functioning in 2000. [lol ... US Embassy hack sounds funny.]

6. Network Crack Program Hacker (NCPH) Group

It was alleged that the NCPH Group was formed in China in 1994, whose leader Tan Dailin was apparently working for the Chinese army. It is believed that the People’s Liberation Army was funded by the NCPH. The group appears to be based out of Zigon in Sichuan Province.

7. Chaos Computer Club (CCC)

The mission of the Chaos Computer Club is to uncover the security flaws, which basically does not only depend upon illegal activities. It was founded in Berlin during the early 1980s and is one of the largest European hacking groups. The group made its point after they used the Bildschirmtext page to steal 134,000 Deutsch Marks from a Hamburg bank, only to send the money back after having completed its mission the next day, which was to expose a security flaw.

Early CCC member Andy Müller-Maguhn in an interview with OWNI stated: “we needed a lot of legal experts to advise us what we could or could not hack, and to help us distinguish between legal activities and grey areas of legality”. The group’s kindly approach has allowed the CCC to become “an accepted and recognized entity because it has worked to educate the public about technology since the 1980s,” Müller-Maguhn added. The group’s most recent focus has been on the mass surveillance complex, in order to fit in a German hacker ring.
CCC Member Falk Garbsch stated:
There have to be consequences. The work of intelligence services has to be reviewedas does their right to exist. If necessary, their aims and methods will have to be redefined. …We have to think about how these [shared] data are processed and where they can be allowed to resurface. And this is not just the challenge for 2015, but for the next 10 years.
The group has strongly objected French nuclear tests, made full use of COMP128 encryption algorithm of a GSM customer card, stole money on live TV via Microsoft’s ActiveX; and examined the German federal government’s own malware. The group’s press release on the topic reads:

“The malware can not only siphon away intimate data but also offers a remote control or backdoor functionality for uploading and executing arbitrary other programs. Significant design and implementation flaws make all of the functionality available to anyone on the internet.”

The CCC may have characteristics of a Marxist, after being caught selling source code from U.S. corporations and governments to the Soviet Union’s secret police KGB.
8. globalHell

globalHell was founded by street-gang member Patrick Gregory. Data on 115 websites were reportedly destroyed by the group charging millions in damages. In order to get away from street gang life, Gregory had turned to computer. His crew of hackers behaved basically the same as a street gang. “global hell will not die” was reportedly written by the group on the United States Army’s website. Gregory confessed in court to causing $2.5 million in hacking damages.

9. Iran’s Tarh Andishan

Looks like the Tarh Andishan wants to control the world’s web-based systems. Mostly based in Tehran, Iran, the group is approximated to have 20 members. A talented hacker group, Tarh Andishan looks like grew out of a Stuxnet worm virus, which Iran claimed the US and Israel had created.

The Iranian government doubled-down on its cyber warfare. The group uses self-propagating software, backdoors, SQL injection, systems, and other techniques. The group is best known for one of the attacks called “Operation Cleaver.” This hacker group has apparently hacked security systems and airline gates. Most findings were not taken into consideration due to the “grave risk to the physical safety of the world” the group reportedly poses, according to the report.

10. TeaMp0isoN:

A 16-year-old hacker with a pseudonym TriCk started this group in 2010. TeaMp0isoN hacked into Facebook, NATO, the English Defense League, including Tony Blair’s email account. The group broke up and stopped functioning in 2012. However, in 2015, the group rebranded itself as a white-hat computer security research group.

There are several other hacking groups who may be more deadlier than the above. We have listed only those hacker groups who have consistently been able to be in public eye due to their hacking exploits.

You can list the hacker groups which you think should have been included in the top 10 list, in the comments below.

COMMENT

Don't know that I'll remember all these different groups and what they do.

My favourite has to be LulzSec ... I'm super impressed by the CIA hack.  And I think they also did Stratfor and others.
Yeah, Jeremy Hammond.
I think I like the big target prankster hacks the best.  They'd be the funniest.

US Will Do Everything to Overthrow ‘Unwanted’ Governments - Assange

15:04 16.09.2015   http://sptnkne.ws/Kd7
The United States uses all its available resources to overthrow “undesirable” governments in other countries, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said, according to German website NEOPresse.

Washington uses everything from military intelligence to commercial organizations to remove foreign governments that it considers unwanted. At the same time, the United States keeps increasing its firepower, establishing military bases across the world.

The current American "empire" consists of over 1,400 military bases in more than 120 countries. Meanwhile, Russia has only 12 military bases, one of which is in Syria that the Americans are currently trying to close down. Washington tried to do the same in Crimea, Assange said.

The American government doesn't act on behalf of its people, but serves to the interests of largest US corporations, the WikiLeaks founder said.

The US government uses unorthodox methods to achieve its objectives — such as the use of mercenaries and other third parties to fight its wars, Assange said
Thus, if there is a government that the United States doesn't like and considers to be a threat to its perception of the world, Washington will do everything to try to get rid of it.

Assange, who has been residing in the Ecuadorian embassy in London under asylum for over three years, has been wanted for questioning by  Swedish authorities since 2010 over accusations of unlawful sexual coercion and rape.

The activist has denied the accusations, stating that Swedish extradition attempts are aimed at sending him to the United States, where he faces espionage charges for publishing thousands of leaked top-secret military documents and diplomatic cables online.

COMMENT

So that's 12 Russian military bases versus over 1,400 American military bases, in 120 countries.
And this is the staggering amount of American military spending versus what other nations spend - combined:

It's worthwhile considering these factors when the US, British, NATO and EU propaganda machines, in the service of the US empire, start making media noise about the threat of 'Russian aggression'.  lol
WikiLeaks have just published a book on the American empire and its geopolitical impact, and it sounds a really good read:

Australian PM Tony Abbott Toppled By His Own Former Communications Minister
SHARMINI PERIES, EXEC. PRODUCER, TRNN:
Welcome to the Real News Network. I'm Sharmini Peries coming to you from Baltimore.

Tony Abbott, who was Australia's prime minister until Monday, was ousted by Malcolm Turnbull and his own party members. Here's what Abbott had to say on his departure.

TONY ABBOTT: The nature of politics has changed in the past decade. We have more polls and more commentary than ever before. Mostly sour, bitter, character assassination. Poll-driven panic has produced a revolving door prime ministership, which can't be good for our country. And a febrile media culture has developed that rewards treachery.

PERIES: Mr. Abbott, who has been weathering a series of poor opinion polls, charged with mismanagement of the budget, received 44 votes in a leadership challenge by his former communications minister Turnbull, who got 54 of the votes. Upon taking office, this is what he had to say.

MALCOLM TURNBULL: The Australia of the future has to be a nation that is agile. That is innovative. That is creative.

PERIES: Under the Australian system, as in the UK, the prime minister is not directly elected by voters, but the party leader is selected by the party that commands most of the seats in parliament. Now joining me to tell us more about what's happening is Dr. Binoy Kampmark. He's a senior lecturer at the School of Global, Urban, and Social Studies at RMIT University in Melbourne. He ran on the senate ticket with Julian Assange for the WikiLeaks Party in the Australian federal election in 2013.

Binoy, good to have you with us at the Real News Network.

BINOY KAMPMARK: It's a pleasure being with you.

PERIES: Binoy, give us a rundown on what's going on in Australian politics, particularly with the Liberal party, in the recent weeks.

KAMPMARK: Well, I think for your listeners and your viewers, I think a very important thing to remember is that the Australian system is based on what is called the Westminster model. The Westminster model is a very strange one. It means that the leader of the country and the leader of the party is not directly elected by the people. So what effectively this means is that the prime minister in office can potentially be deposed. Can potentially be overturned, you name it, assassinated, whatever sort of exciting term you'd like to use there.

And interesting enough, in the caption that you mentioned there, Tony Abbott's remarks, this is exactly what's been happening in Australia since 2008. Prime ministers have been surprisingly mortal in their positions because of party opinion rather than public opinion because the party membership have gotten very worried about the elections, the result being that they get rid of the prime minister and they replace the prime minister with their favorite. And that's what we've been seeing lately.

PERIES: And I understand that Turnbull is the fourth prime minister you've had since 2013.

KAMPMARK: Yes. It's too many, as far as I'm concerned. They all, these characters who are filling the ledgers and filling the accounts. The reality of it is, and this is something that I've conversated about extensively and I've written about, the idea about having a prime minister through the revolving door, as Mr. Abbott himself said, irrespective of whatever political belief you might have, there is no fixed term in Australia. There is no fixed prime ministerial term. There is a flexibility there about calling elections and there is a flexibility there about leadership. And it may be also something to consider in a broader reform for the system. But that's the nature of the Australian political system.

PERIES: Now, both of these men are part of a Liberal party that is actually far from liberal when it comes to issues such as gay marriage and addressing issues of climate change. And in this particular case Turnbull seems to be more on the right side, at least, of history moving forward.

KAMPMARK: Well, yes. Again, for those who are not familiar, the reality is that in Australia there is a term used, liberal. It is not the term, of course, that is accepted in the United States. The term liberal is associated usually with the progressive side of politics. Liberal in Australia has a specific classicist association with Sir Robert Menzies, who was the leader of the party from the '40s, and was the leader of the party throughout the early stages of the cold war in Australia. So the reality is that we're dealing with a conservative party with conservative values.

Now, historically, Malcolm Turnbull is not perceived to be that conservative, and that is one of the problems. He's been accused by his own party members as being a progressive in some sort of clothing of another conservative variety. So the question is, will he be a true conservative member on the liberal side in the Australian context of politics, or will he actually do something different? And that is something that people are waiting for, and we'll see what happens.

PERIES: And what are the opinion polls in Australia like in terms of some of the more liberal issues? What are the people thinking, in other words, about climate change and issues of gay marriage, for example?

KAMPMARK: Well, in terms of gay marriage the opinion polls suggest an overwhelming acceptance about the acceptability, as it were, of the institution. And that Australia has been lagging behind other countries, and that Australia effectively should, as it were, take a position on this more firmly and reform the law accordingly. That's one thing.

It depends which issue, of course, we're talking about. If we're talking about, for example, refugees, the Australian electorate is rather conservative. The reason why, for example, the opposition leader of the Australian [inaud.] party and the, in fact, numerous parties with the exception perhaps of the Greens in Australia believe that refugees should be kept out of the country. Well, that's something that we'll have to see whether Mr. Turnbull changes it.

In terms of climate change, Mr. Turnbull has shown amenability towards changing that platform, and I think he's going to budge on that. But when it comes to refugees and those broader issues, I'm not entirely sure whether he will change that.

PERIES: But at the same time, Abbott's leadership came to a head, I think, particularly when he took such a harsh position, a reaction to the refugees and indicated that they've managed to stop boats from coming to Australia. Is that the political climate that he reflects?

KAMPMARK: Sadly I do think it is. You have to remember, if you look carefully at the speeches being given by the new Australian prime minister, he's very careful not to mention the refugee situation too much. With the exception of this, that Mr. Abbott before he as deposed did make the concession that there would be the acceptance of 12,000 refugees from Syria.

But with the exception of that, the hardline is fundamental. The Australian body politic, as it were, the suspicion about people arriving on boats is a very strong one. I'm not suggesting that it's a very good idea at all. I think in many ways it's an absurd thing. But it has been built into the political culture which has made politicians constantly build their political careers on being strong on preventing people arriving on boats to Australia. And I am interested to see whether Mr. Turnbull will change this. My feeling is he's not necessarily going to change this at all.

PERIES: And where is the Labour Party in all of this? We of course saw this week in the UK the Labour Party electing a much more radical leader, Jeremy Corbyn, to head the party. Is there any such possibility in Australia?

KAMPMARK: The individual who's currently leading the Labour Party is what I would call a conventional technocrat. Tony Blair would be very proud of him. The old, of course, the former British prime minister who was speaking about stakeholder economies was talking about a labor movement, if you like, that was more connected to the market. This individual, namely Mr. Shorten, is not in the Corbyn mould. Corbyn is the exception to the rule.

I will tell you an example in terms of what happened recently in terms of Labour Party politics in Australia. At the Labour Party conference they accepted turn back the boats as a policy. They accepted that people should be detained in camps, and they accepted that there should be no resettlement in Australia for refugees. And if that's not a defiance of traditional Labour Party principles in what we would think about that, I don't know what is.

PERIES: And a very curious note on your bio was that you along with Julian Assange ran for the WikiLeaks party in Australia in federal election in 2013. Tell us a sense of where the WikiLeaks party is at and your role in Australian politics at the moment.

KAMPMARK: Well, my role in Australian politics is as an annoying scribbler, at the moment. I dabble and I engage in as many things as I can on the ground. In terms of the actual WikiLeaks experiment it is I suppose, to put it lightly, dormant at the moment. Julian Assange has many things to deal with in captivity, so to speak, pseudo-captivity in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, and I have various things I need to do in the context of broader political issues.

But when it comes down to it the ideas still prevail, but the political structure, of course, is something that's become a bit hard to sustain. But that's the nature of these things. It's an incredible effort, as anyone who knows how to run a party knows. So when it comes down to it, happily engaged politically with pen, not perhaps so much with paper in the actual sense.

PERIES: Dr. Binoy Kampmark, I thank you so much for enlightening us with Australian politics today, and we hope to have you back very soon.

KAMPMARK: Anytime. It's lovely speaking with you.

PERIES: And thank you for joining us on the Real News Network.

COMMENT

Some interesting commentary on the recent Australian Liberal Party leadership switch.

I'm conservative in my outlook, so I would support most socially conservative positions - as well as firm control of borders.
But that conflicts with opposition to:
eg. censorship, mass surveillance etc, and economic punishment of the unemployed, elderly, and working classes, as well as privatisation of public assets & services, and entry into American 'free trade' agreements.

So there's no right mix of positions, from my point of view.

TwitterStasi Censorship & Washington Whoring

Twitter's about to become a 'political engagement' facilitator ...
In other words, it's about to prostitute itself ... some more.
That explains the $160k they've spent lobbying Washington this year:
Twitter
hired a trio of firms
/ first outside lobbyists to work DC
/ spent $160K / first-half

While not trying to whore itself to Washington, Twitter's protecting politicians online ... from reappearance of their own comments.
 How admirable.

UPDATE
Unable to follow-back those that have followed me on TwitterStasi, at the moment.

All TwitterStasi gives me is this ridiculous 'unable to follow more people' notice and a link to their mysterious 'rules':

So either:

a)

I've maybe breached the TwitterStasi's mysterious 'rules.'
And, no, I could not be screwed reading their rules to scour for possibilities ...
Like:
Thou shalt not seek assistance from German Foreign Office TwitterStasi account re Mutti Merkel's Migrant Crisis.  lol

The obligation ought to be on TwitterStasi to notify users exactly which rule has been violated, rather than be left guessing from possibilities -- that may not even apply (eg if the follow limit has been reached).
Judging by zero feedback from TwitterStasi to date, where there's been technical issues I've tweeted about, I wouldn't hold my breath tackling any rule-related issues with the TwitterStasi -- who clearly block legitimate political comment ... & political humour.

b)

If it's not TwitterStasi censored political humour/comment related, I've reached TwitterStasi's follow limit.
However, I note I'm on 2,002 followed -- so it may not be this issue at all (as TwitterStasi follow limit is bang on 2,000).
 c)
Perhaps Twitter didn't like me pointing out to other users that TwitterStasi censor unfairly:

That a user can be blocked from performing given functions & be left to guess why (from multiple possibilities), says a lot about how crap TwitterStasi is in terms of customer service principles.

Yes, I realise this is a free service.  But I add value to their sh*tty platform, by inputting into it for free, for the enjoyment and information of other users on their platform, and the least they can do send a direct automated notification, indicating specifically what is at issue.
