Gregorian Chants

Gregorian Chant

Plain Song / Gregorian Chant Timeline

BACKGROUND:
  • End of Antiquity (Greco-Roman)
  • Roman Republic
  • Roman Empire

Roman Empire carries on traditions established by Greeks

NEW CULT ON THE BLOCK:
Rise of Christianity
First Century CE
new religious cult:  figure Jew & Roman subject

Yehoshua of Nazareth (aka 'Jesus')

teachings focus on:

1.  one god
2.  equality between social classes

[comment:  sounds like the current 'oneness' or universality ideology and indoctrination underpinning the international law US-led Western power-grab; establishment of supranational institutions; intrusions on national sovereignty AND intrusions on individuality & choice, in the name of enshrining the rights of various minorities (which always involves obligations on the fettered majority, versus onus on the minority to adapt to the majority); & the entirety of the 'humanitarian' ideology, with its in-step drive alongside capitalism, towards globalisation and centralised control of the planet by ruling capitalist elites.   Now there seems to be a secular god:  it is an outward 'god' of capitalism (its Messiah), & that god is 'man', the labourer, the debt-slave and the consumer.  The oneness/unity and equality spin sounds a lot like Marxism, only they're not looking at economic equality (just dictating a socially Marxist regime, that's not dispossessing the capitalists -- it's dispossessing the people).   And it's a god that demands 'safe spaces' ... LOL ...  If capitalism is the modern-age Messiah, if man is the modern god, then there is also a 'holy spirit' (and that is money/profits/ global markets etc) ... so it's a HOLY TRINITY and profit/money is the Holy Spirit, or something like that.]

-- dangerous to Roman power structure

[comment:  modern-day secular version of this religion is not at all dangerous to the US-led capitalists who believe they have a right to 'global markets'.  However, it is dangerous to everyone else.

The Capitalist Empire which indoctrinates & pushes for a universal 'love-in', fits in with the agenda pushing for a vast one world human cattle market of producers and consumers, with gradual dismemberment of sovereign nation states and individual peoples as individual peoples with their own identities, cultures and values/moral choices. ]

-- in Greece prior to Rome & in Rome, religion polytheistic
-- (worship more than one god, system of many gods)
-- Roman emperors were also treated as gods themselves
-- Christian idea of one god & non-violence
-- was dangerous to polytheistic power structure of Rome
-- how would Rome maintain armies and defend borders

[comment:

Today's threat is:

  • secular capitalist powers outwardly worshipping (ie exploiting) the 'humanitarian' sole 'god', having established various supranational authorities and structures that usurp power from the people of free nations;
  • the use of international law to do much the same;
  • plus failure of states to maintain INDEPENDENT, armed & fully combat ready national armies.

Any nation that is incapable of defending itself with military force will cease to exist as a nation, by relying on the continued goodwill and continued existence of others (which comes with obligations that can be exploited & may not always be in national interests).

The Christians preaching 'pacifism' but killing in the name of their ideology & torturing heretics etc, makes a mockery of the 'pacifism' preaching ... but the entire package is a mockery, including all the propaganda 'saints' and 'miracles'  ... What a fraud.]

-- first three centuries:  persecution of Christians
-- Emperor Constantine issues Edict of Milan, 3rd C.
-- legalising & protecting Christianity
-- under Roman laws, free to worship any god,
-- as long as also worshipped the Roman gods & Roman emperors
-- due to religious freedom in Rome, Christianity flourished
-- Christianity then grew beyond critical mass able to be thwarted
-- Christianity arose from cult to religion
-- 60 years after Edict of Milan, Emperor Theodosius I
-- makes Christianity official Roman state religion
-- later, fall of Rome and continued rise of Christianity
-- result:  beginning of period of severe unrest, war & famine
-- world order cultivated through centuries Greco-Roman
-- culture was soon replaced by tribalism and civil war
-- eastern part of Roman empire held out better
-- the Byzantine empire = abt. 5th C. to 1453 CE
-- (capital, Constantinople) fell to Ottoman Turks
-- eastern Roman empire gave rise to traditions of
-- the Greek & Russian Orthodox churches

-- eastern half of Empire, rise of Gregorian chant
-- Christians of both the eastern & western portions
-- of Roman Empire inherited the Jewish tradition of chanting scripture
-- Jews would congregate & chant on specific days
-- Jews would chant from Tehillim (ie 'praises' / aka 'Book of Psalms (C.))
-- Jews would chant from Ketuvim

-- Tehillim
-- first book of the Ketuvim ('Writings') (third section of Hebrew bible)
-- 'psalms' = Gk. for 'psalmoi' ('instrumental music')
-- many psalms / tehillim are linked to King David
   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psalms
-- Christians share the 'old testament' with Jusaism /sing or intone tehillim
-- to 'intone' is to sing from one note
-- singing of songs from bible was referred to as psalmedy
-- early Christians would meet for communal meals & worship
-- at these meals, they would sing hymns & psalms (ie tehillim)
-- large, rectangular spaces for gatherings known as 'basilicas'
-- early Christians (eg Saint Augustine)
-- recognised music's power to influence
-- character & mood, similar to Greek convention of ethos
-- Augustine & others considered music's power to influence mood
-- to best be used for worshipping god
-- therefore, non-spiritual music (esp. instrumental music) was deemed sinful
-- for this reason, nearly all next 1,000 years of European music is acapella
-- ie. all unaccompanied singing with no instruments
-- Christianity developed a monastic tradition of intense, isolated worship
-- and heavy prayer
-- monastic monks developed a system for singing the psalm (tehillim) verses
-- & for singing the hymns
-- / the difference between the two:
-- psalms (tehillim) = derived from bible
-- hymns have extra biblical sources
-- many newly written texts and prayers
-- are both songs of praise
-- which eventually coalesced into a repertoire
-- of chants & bible readings, known as a 'liturgy'
-- the songs they sang are defined as 'plain song'
-- at least five distinct liturgical repertoires (aka 'dialects') of plain song:

    -- Ambrosian (Milanese)

    -- Gaelican
-- Mozarabic (Arabised Iberians, Spain - Moorish rule, Christian)
    -- Old Roman
    -- Gregorian

    [ see also:  Andalusi Romance]
   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozarabs

-- the Old Roman dialect (ie chant) was standardised eventually throughout Christendom

-- this repertoire of plain song is known as 'Gregorian chant'

-- Pope Gregory I (aka Saint Gregory the Great), the namesake of this musical material

-- Pope Gregory I:  ruled as pope from 590 CE to 604 CE

-- he lived centuries before the REDISCOVERY of musical notation

-- notational systems developing following Antiquity were long forgotten by his time

-- for following reason, Gregorian liturgical dialect came to dominate:
  • legend of Saint Gregory:  created as propaganda, in favour of Roman liturgy over others
-- legend:  'holy spirit', permutation of the Christian god
-- took the form of a dove and dictated the form of the Roman repertoire
-- to Saint Gregory
-- the propaganda worked:  all the competing chanting
-- repertoires were eventually suppressed
-- manner of suppression, borne of political alliance between the Franks
-- peoples of modern France and Germany, & the Roman popes abt. 752 CE
-- formed between the King of the Franks Pepin the First
-- & leader of church, Pope Stephen II
-- mutually beneficial deal:
-- church needed protection from hostile northern tribes (Lombards)
-- Frankish kings needed formal recognition of hereditary rights to
        consolidate their power
-- results of alliance successful:
-- Lombards expelled from (now) northern Italy
-- Rome recognised Pepin as official ruler of Frankish lands
-- King Pepin actively imported Roman liturgy for official use
-- Pepin's son, Charlemagne, completely conquered the Lombards
-- and even more actively imported the Roman liturgy
-- arriving triumphant into Rome as protector of papacy
-- Charlemagne was crowned first Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire
-- on Christmas Day of 800 CE

-- inception of Holy Roman Empire makes [five (5)] separate permutations of Rome
    1.  Roman Republic
    2.  Roman Empire
    3.  Western Roman Empire - Rome
    4.  Eastern Roman Empire - Constantinople (Byzantine empire)
    5.  Holy Roman Empire

-- Gregorian chant is derived from the OLD ROMAN CHANT DIALECT
-- because it evolved in capital city of Christendom (Rome)
-- newly inaugurated season of peace led to:  Carolingian Renaissance
-- ie. period of philosophical & cultural flourishing in what is today:
    France, Germany & Italy
-- [propaganda] + political stability = Gregorian chant thrives

*comment:  Christendom would have surely entered Greece first?
*comment:  I have added the split east/west Roman empire (above), making it x5 permutations (rather than the four mentioned)

Transition from Antiquity to Middle Ages

Emperor Theodosius I

Theodosius the Great (Flavius Theodosius)
  • issues decree, establishing Christianity official religion of Rome
  • ended state sponsorship for traditional Roman gods
  • introduced a period of prosecution & punishment for non-Christians
-- religious turmoil that resulted, contributed to religious instability already evident in civil war and border conflicts with northern barbarians (the Goths)

On death of Theodosius, two sons split empire:
  • -- eastern Empire:  Constantinople
  • -- western Empire:  Rome
Rome was in freefall, but Christianity was ascending

COMMENT

This was really interesting: religion, history & music in one package.

Might have to come back to checking some of these links. No time now.

Civilisation is only a very thin veneer.  I'm betting there will be another 'fall of Rome' and civilisation will be lost for hundreds of years (if there's survivors after nukes war).
*Religion is (a) tradition (b) social control, c) political control, manipulation & opportunism, and (d) one of the means of large common interest groups (values, tradition, heritage etc) organising themselves socially, politically, administratively, culturally etc., a way of maintaining group cohesion/unity; it is a way of asserting political power as a group -- a strategy of having group (leader) interests met; and it is probably a social strategy, which goes back to organisation of large human groups generally.  That's all I can think of, just off the top of my head.
I find religion very interesting, as religion is entwined with history, sociology and politics (plus art, music and so much more).  Religion is politics. I think.  LOL  It certainly has an impact -- eg. Pope whoever-his-assumed-pope-name is currently making pronouncements on immigration to USA, and thus undoubtedly attempting to influence domestic US policies (while pushing for much the same in Europe).
These people have no business leading the gullible to vote against their own interests.  But that would most likely be in keeping with the historic role of these Christian religious frauds:  ie screw the masses.
I cannot understand why European Christians do not return to the ancient religions of their European ancestors:  at least it would be authentic.

NOTE:  if early Christianity quickly reached a 'critical mass' in the Roman Empire, that  could not be repelled by the Roman state, what does that tell Europeans about the potential for the demise of Europe when the 'critical mass' of non-indigenous peoples & non-Western values/ideology/religion/customs is approached etc.
Europe will be finished.

N Korea launches ballistic missile from submarine – Seoul

Published time: 23 Apr, 2016 13:41

North Korea has conducted its third submarine ballistic missile firing, Yonhap news agency reports, citing the South Korean military. There has been no immediate report on whether the launch was successful.

A submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) was fired Saturday from the Sea of Japan (also known as East Sea) water zone in the open sea direction at about 6:30 p.m. local time (0930 GMT), Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

The missile flew “for a few minutes,” Yonhap agency said, citing a military source.

Seoul believes the missile launch was made to make a point in the wake of a key 7th meeting of North Korea Workers' Party in May. A congress of the ruling party has been summoned for the first time in 36 years.

The first underwater launch of North Korean SLBM missile KN-11 was made on November 27, 2015, and allegedly resulted in failure.

The next try on December 21 was reported to be a success, with Pyongyang demonstrating its leader Kim Jong-un observing the launch.

The initial information about Pyongyang using an upgraded Soviet-era ballistic missile submarine to establish the naval component of the national nuclear triad emerged in 2014.

It is believed that in the early 1990s North Korea bought from Russia 10 Golf-class diesel-electric missile-capable submarines, also known as “Project 629, designed in 1950s.” It is believed that Pyongyang has made at least one of the seaworthy and now is using it for tasting a sea-based ballistic missile of its own.

The South Korean military suspects Pyongyang of preparing its fifth nuclear test in the very near future, after satellite images exposed that North Korea had resumed tunnel excavation at its main nuclear test site. A similar activity was observed there prior to the latest alleged thermonuclear test in January.

Dismemberment of Indigenous Europe: Criminal Dispossession

Dismemberment of Indigenous Europe: Criminal Dispossession

Edit 23/04/2016

Britain potentially exiting the European Union (article below and here) might be the least of Germany's concerns.

Germany will cease to exist as a Germanic state in the not too distant future.

As at 2016 the German government website (below & here) is quoting a 'one in five' figure of non-Germans in the German population.
However, as at 2007 (if not earlier), the media has quoted that same 'one in five' figure, which renders the ongoing and more recent quotes of 'one in five' impossible due to:
  • a decades long trend of well below replacement birthrates of German females of childbearing age;
  • ongoing immigration to Germany (plus effects of foreign family reunification policies, that are no doubt in place);
  • far higher birth rates of immigrant populations that produce in excess of replacement levels (while the German population reproduces at well below replacement levels and has done so for decades, substantially decreasing the available pool of childbearing females with each generation).
The German birthrate is in freefall and has been at well below replacement levels for decades
That 'one in five' figure should also be higher, as it does not include successive generations of non-Germans that are later counted as 'Germans'.
Estimates would also need to take into account mass non-European immigration that has accelerated over the last decade or so.
Check out the German government website propaganda about Germany the country of "immigrants" (below & here).
As if Germany -- in the heart of Europe -- is a newly established settlement colony.
The German people have been dispossessed of their heritage.
But this is not confined to Germany:  it is an organised program of deliberate dispossession of Europeans that has been conducted for decades everywhere that the US-Anglo empire control, as well as nations controlled by other historically imperialist capitalists (eg. France), and is also pronounced in European nations that are strongly in the American-Anglo sphere of influence (eg Sweden).
Germany been under US-Anglo military, political, intellectual and cultural occupation and indoctrination for decades after Germany's WWII defeat.
Europeans are actually a small demographic of the world's population.
What is happening in Germany is a replica of the decades long demographics shift in the colonies.
This is not confined to merely the consequences of the US-Anglo war machine.  It's worse.  It is a deliberate program.
What kind of criminals implement this policy?
I'm starting to freak out.  I seriously feel sick in the stomach.  This is unbelievable.

2007 - '1 in 5' - Not German
Germany faces immigration issues
December 27, 2007 8:33:55 PM PST
 By Noel Cisneros

BERLIN --

Immigration is certainly one of the big issues in American politics. It is also a huge issue in Europe.

Some have coined the term "Eurabia" to reflect the large numbers of Muslims now living in Europe.

In Berlin, at the Bundestag - the German parliament, there is an engraving which reads "Dem Deutche Volke' "for the German people."

Just
who constitutes the German people, is very much a subject of national debate. While many neighborhoods look traditionally German, in the past 30 years Germany has transformed into a nation of immigrants.

One in five Germans is a first or second generation immigrant. In Europe, only France has more Muslims.

"I think the biggest surprise to Americans who haven't spent time in Europe is that it is much more multi-cultural, much more multi-ethnic than they think. This idea that Europe is this white protestant Christian place is much more complicated than that," said UC Berkeley political science lecturer Amy Gurowitz.

Like America, Germany is wrestling with how best to accommodate its changing demographics. But unlike America, Germany has no national history of integration, no melting pot. The country is home to millions of guest workers who came in the 70s to work, but never became German citizens, and never left.

"The problem is, until the early 90's the immigrants themselves dreamed they would go back. Even within my family, my grandfather was always dreaming of going, my whole family, but they were someone sitting on their luggage, one day we will go," said Ozcan Mutlu from the Berlin Parliament.

Ozcan Mutlu is a member of Berlin's parliament. His heritage is Turkish. He points out only a third of the country's Turks are citizens -- many don't speak German, only a fraction goes on to college. Many do not feel welcome.

"In my country we are at the beginning of this, therefore it is also very difficult for the immigrants to accept themselves as Germans, when the German themselves are in an identity crisis," said Mutlu.  [Comment: the notion of a German identity 'crisis' is laughable.  Is this the propaganda that was in currency in 2007?]

The identity crisis is in part because of reunification. Seventeen years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany struggles to become whole between East and West, it manages 15-percent unemployment, millions of immigrants. Its traditional institutions, like the church are in decline [Comment:  'identity crisis' my ass.  It is a war on the German people by those that are in power and clearly not serving the interests of indigenous Germans.  And it is the same war being waged on ALL EUROPEANS. ]

It is a country taking beginning steps toward multiculturalism[Comment:  So Germany is erasing itself without the informed consent of Germans who cannot possibly consent to self-erasure, in any event.]

In September, the German Parliament tightened up requirements on citizenship. Applicants must now be able to prove they can speak and write German well, and that they are employable and haven't accessed the German welfare system.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has said: "Anyone coming here must tolerate our Western and Christian roots." [Comment:  what a joke.  Fast-forward to:  Cologne rapes.]

She moved recently to pass the most sweeping immigration reforms in German history -- one that will funnel $1 billion dollars a year into integration measures such as language classes, job training and child care.

Her December immigration summit was boycotted by Turkish groups, who protested that the German language requirements don't apply to Americans or Canadians.

Germany has the same issues of forced marriages, head scarves and youth violence as the rest of Western Europe.

One of those arrested in September's terrorist bomb plot was a Turkish national. But Germany has not experienced the large scale intercultural violence that has occured in Britain, Spain and France.

The realpolitik is that Germany needs immigrants to replenish its workforce. Germany has the lowest birthrate in Europe, and without immigrants, Germany's famous social welfare system and the third largest economy in the world will not survive.

If Britain votes to leave the E.U., Germany could be one of the biggest losers

By Griff Witte April 12 [2016]

  EXTRACTS

...

But when Schäuble was recently asked what Germany would do if Britain voted to leave the European Union, he couldn’t help baring his soul.

“We would cry,” the 73-year-old politician said.

The comment drew laughs.

...
[German Finance Minister Wolfgang]  Schäuble has been more outspoken. On a visit to London last month, he not only promised to shed tears if Britain leaves, he also told the BBC that it would be “a poison to the economy in the U.K., the European continent and for the global economy as well.”

Almut Möller, head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations, said such comments reflect just how deeply German policymakers fear the impact of Brexit on the European Union — an institution that has become inseparable from German identity.

“E.U. membership gave Germany liberation from its past and permission to reenter the family of Western states,” she said. “To lose Britain now would signal to the rest of the world — including to Russia and China — that the E.U. is dismantling.”

For a long time, such an unraveling was unthinkable, she said. But now it’s a real threat, regardless of which way Britain votes.

“These things have been taken for granted for many decades,” Möller said. “It’s a new environment now.”

"Slava matushke Rossii!
Slava russkomu Tsaryu!
Slava vere Pravoslavnoy!
I soldatu molodtsu!"
Vzveytes', sokoly, orlami!
Polno gore gorevat'!

Soar, falcons, eagles!
Full of grief grieve!
Whether it under tents
In the camp stand!
Camp - a city of canvas,
Sea street noise,
Golden gilding,
Church domes are burning!
There's barely dawn comes,
Story rustle in the infantry,
Drum burst into the sky,
And bayonets shine!
Unfold there with dawn
Valiant game
Story goes on building the wall,
And hire a bang !!!
All are obedient to the royal will,
According to the "hammering action" Concha dispute
And on the same battlefield
The song together clap chorus:
"Glory to Mother Russia!
Glory to the Russian Tsar!
The glory of the Orthodox faith!
And dashing soldier! "
Soar, falcons, eagles!
Full of grief grieve!
Whether it under tents
In the camp stand!

Think I've posted this before ... but I like it.  So here it is again.

Spent forever doing a gif that turned out really sh*t.  It's so crap, I'm not going to bother loading it.  Too busy.  Annoying.  Senseless.
It didn't turn out anything like I expected.  Gifs work better with images only, no text.

Did try to use the video editor program, but it's been about 4 months since I messed with that and I can't remember how to use it.
The photo editing thing was annoying me as well.  No patience to do transitions or to try to mess with video editor, almost starting afresh again.

Having a really bad day.

Combination of like a big depressive slump and anger, or frustration.  Or just bad mood?  LOL ... Really bad combination, whatever it is.  Felt like crying but I can't cry ... as in I can hardly ever cry and if I do cry, I barely cry at all.  It's really crap.

Been keeping stupid hours again, so maybe that's what's put the mood out of whack.

Frustrated that time seems to go at super fast speed, but I'm on super slow speed and I can't do whatever I'd like to do in the time that there is to do anything in (even though I have all the time in the world).  WTF is with that?  I'm still never getting around to doing what I'd like to do and never doing what I'm supposed to do, and I'm super slow at whatever it is that I'm doing, even if it's what I want to do.  LOL
It's nothing but frustration here.
Kind of hard to keep up with 'static' news - accessing boring mainstream news feed or directly accessing news publications I might want to look at (if I remember & could be bothered), as opposed to having a running feed of what I'm interested in following, set up and constantly on the move (like I had it on Twitter).  That worked much better for me.
I don't know what the f*ck's going on anymore.

Mainstream news is full of garbage.
Prince is dead; prince Philip drives Obama to lunch; the c*nts at Facebook are determining the news feed that gets seen.
Bet we've got it worse than North Korea.  It's non-stop propaganda, manipulation, and waste of money social engineering campaigns chasing selling a perfect world dream that's never going to happen.  F*ck off.

Wish journalists would stop writing novels, when they could simply give the point-form facts.  Not interested in their opinions.

And programmers are such assholes.  If I wanted news site access shaped to the location that I'm in, I'd have gone to the local news, c*nts.  What a f*cking annoying waste of time that is.  F*ck off.
