The territorial spat over the South China Sea once again dominated the Shangri-La Dialogue, in what was becoming a geopolitical competition. Admiral Sun Jianguo, deputy chief of general staff of the People's Liberation Army, said China and Asean are perfectly capable of working together to preserve peace and stability in the waterway and iron out any differences through consultation.  [People's Liberation Army = China] "Any countries that are not directly concerned are not allowed to sabotage our path of peace for their selfish gains," he said at the security summit, which ended yesterday. The three-day event was organised by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies. Admiral Sun spoke for half an hour in a speech that did not explicitly refer to the US when criticising interference in the disputes. Dr Jonathan Pollack, a senior fellow at the Centre for East Asia Policy Studies at the US-based Brookings Institution, said that by not referring to the US, China signalled that it did not want to "let what are obviously strong bilateral differences to get so injected into the conversation that it makes any reasonable or reasoned discussion impossible". Last Saturday, US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter had warned that China's actions in the South China Sea were putting it at risk of "erecting a Great Wall of self-isolation".  [comment:  LOL ... that's their stock standard bullsh*t; it's what they say about Russia when the US capitalist target Russia for sanctions and US capitalist aggression. ] Admiral Sun yesterday rejected this notion, saying many countries have been "warmer and friendlier to me, and respect and trust me more" as compared with last year, when he also attended the summit. "We were not isolated in the past, we are not isolated and we will not be isolated," he said. He also said escalating tensions in the South China Sea were because of threats and military exercises by "some big countries", and that the levels of threat meant China needed military defence there. Admiral Sun also lashed out at the Philippines for initiating a case against China at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, saying it was in breach of a bilateral agreement and in violation of international law. China has said that it will reject the ruling, which is expected in weeks. Asked how China will respond to Philippine President-elect Rodrigo Duterte's desire to resume bilateral talks with China, Admiral Sun said he hopes Mr Duterte "can shake off the burden of the last administration and remove the obstacle to bilateral development". MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The large-scale special tactical exercise is being held on July 3-14 July in Russia's Moscow and Smolensk regions. The PAP Snow Leopard and Falcon commando units and Rosgvardiya's Vityaz unit are taking part in the training, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from the site of events on Sunday. "Neighborly relations between our countries are a strategic line between the Chinese and Russian sides. Today, we are beginning a new stage of cooperation. We are glad to have friendly relations with our partner and are ready to carry out common tasks," the chief of Rosgvardiya's general staff, Sergey Chenchik, said. Chenchik's Chinese counterpart said that the two countries' interior forces are holding their third joint exercise and are working to improve mutual understanding and improving security in the scenario of a regional terrorist threat. The units will use equipment such as mortar batteries, Mi-8 transport helicopters and armored vehicles. The National Guard of Russia was formed in April and combined a range of internal security forces into one federal body tasked with securing borders, countering terrorism and organized crime, protecting public order, guarding state facilities and carrying out gun control. The academic arrived at the faculty’s meeting last Wednesday where director of studies across all the university’s colleges as around 30 economists discussed teaching material and courses. Ms Bateman, a lecturer has researched the development of the European economy, sat at the two-hour meeting without anyone mentioning her nudity they just went on with a normal meeting about tripos and marking. Nigel Knight, director of studies at Churchill College and the chair of the meeting, glanced at her and then said to his secretary: “I think we need some cups for the coffee” and everyone else just stared straight ahead. His remarks, however, are understood to have taken place before the meeting started. Ms Bateman, who is an economics fellow at Gonville and Caius College, posed naked for a nude portrait of her by the painter Anthony Connolly last year. A source who took part in the meeting told the Daily Telegraph: “It is well known to the faculty that she has posed naked but obviously the behaviour here was different. One thing is to pose naked and another to show up naked. “This was a standard meeting about the teaching of economics and we moved away from her state of dress. Earlier this year David Cameron, the Prime Minister, led calls for the university to take more ethnic minority students as figures revealed Oxford had only taken 27 black undergraduate students in 2014. It followed calls from the Rhodes Must Fall movement to ‘decolonise’ the university’s curriculum. 'Suitable subjects' The university has commissioned dozens of new portraits at a cost of £900 each, the Sunday Times reported. Staff and students have been ask to nominate ‘suitable subjects’ by the end of this week, it added. Separately, colleges already have new pictures and paintings of prominent figures, including the portrait of Libby Lane, the first female Anglican bishop, at St Peter’s College. Lucy Banda Sichone and Norman Manley, two Rhodes scholars and activists, have also been placed on the walls of Rhodes House, it was reported. A photo of Naomi Wolf, the feminist and Rhodes scholar, is expected to go on display in Rhodes House, the newspaper added. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Ms Wolf said: "In my college, New College, there are portraits of men everywhere. "While pictures are not the same as gender or race equality, I do not think this is trivial. If all you see are white men, white men, white men, it is very hard to believe that people in your society think you have a place in history. Changing iconography helps to change how you see history.” Portraits female journalists Amelia Gentleman and Hari Kunzru have also been put up at Wadham College. Lord Macdonald, Wadham's warden, told the publication: "I want to address the predominance of portraits of white men. These are grand figures and they deserve their place in our history.  But Wadham is proud of its diversity and it's time to reflect this in the portraits that adorn our walls." The paintings and photographs are part of Oxford University’s Diversifying Portraiture project, which was launched in 2014. Its objective was to collect 250 existing portraits of those who had "challenged the stereotypes and preconceptions of their times" and putting them online. Got some Chinese takeaway thinking maybe food will help, but it's not helping.  Nor is the lemonade I've been craving.  But I'm craving more.  I'm super thirsty.
